Received these yesterday and here's the follow-up answer to my own question posted 3 weeks ago: they're exactly the thickness I was hoping for! I think one of the pics in the description was leading me to think they might be thinner than they actually are. They aren't like thin, nylon dress socks, and they're not thick like cotton crew socks. Rather, they compare very well to a casual/dress cotton sock found at Gap or Banana Republic. For shoes or boots with a snug (but not tight) fit, these socks work well. They're thick enough that the foot doesn't feel slippery in the shoe/boot, while also thin enough that they don't add to overall foot volume very much.
As far as sizing, I measure 8.5 D Brannock and the size Medium I ordered fit well.
