I have a question for all you watch connoisseurs or enthusiasts, I've only owned one watch which is the WHITE / TAN LEATHER watch by MVMT watches ( I spent around AU$100). Since then it has now turned into my work watch so you can imagine that it's now pretty scuffed up from working in a clothing store (coat hangers etc). So now I'm venturing into the realm of automatic watches for outside of work wear and I while I'm wanting a solid all-rounder, I know that automatic watches are genuinely more expensive BUT I'm not wanting to spend a fortune on one. Therefore what watches would you consider a solid alternative option for an affordable automatic watch? Would you consider that the Davosa Vanguard watch at this price a "reasonably priced" option? which comes to A$706.70 :/

DanielSteinFor automatics, I would say that there is at least one tier that is less expensive than this Davosa. You could look at Orient, Seiko (always a good value), Techne, and many more. Have a look through the watch review sites like Worn & Wound, aBlogToWatch, GMT Minus Five. You are bound to find something you like in your price range.

DressCasualI've checked out some of the watches you've recommend and nothing seems to pop out to me like the Davosa watch does. I guess it's like a "you get what you pay for" kinda thjng. Justifiably in Australian prices it's like paying double the LG G Watch R price (A$349) but it's an automatic watch not a smart watch. which will probably be out dated very quickly.
So I can see the value in it in some way or another but I'm not particularly confident in spending my entire savings on it. Are there any watches in particular that come to mind when you look at the Davosa watch?

DanielSteinTo be honest, nothing in particular. But then, the design of this watch is very unique, even at this price point (maybe especially at this price point?). What I would do is figure out what attracts you to this watch in particular and look for those things in other lines that are within your budget.
If the look of the watch is what is really drawing you in, maybe even consider some watches with less expensive quartz movements, or a vintage watch, possibly one with a manual movement. I think thalf the battle is figuring out what works for you and what you like. Figure that out, and then the world is your oyster.

DanielSteinDanielStein, you might want to consider the Tissot Visodate if you like the style of the Davosa and looking for something a little cheaper. It's a similarly classic style, rather minimalist watch that holds up quite well as a dress/casual watch, though probably not as much versatility out of the box as the Davosa, given the Davosa has the additional bands. The Visodate has been my everyday dress watch for about 2 years now and I've been very happy with it.

It seems they also now offer a variant with metal band: http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/the-value-proposition-the-tissot-visodate-milanais
If you'd like to save a bit of money, I can definitely recommend the Visodate. This seems to be a very competitive price for the Davosa though, so the saving isn't as great (still AU$100+ or so cheaper). The Davosa is regulated, which is a nice additional feature in terms of quality assurance. They also have slightly different movements - the Davosa has the ETA 2892-2 movement as compared to the ETA 2836-2 movement in the Tissot. There's a fair few forums out there with posts if you're interested in reading up on different movements. http://www.watchtalkforum.com/topic/1108-the-movements-of-tissot-and-its-representative-watches/ is not a bad place to start for a quick overview.)
Bottom line, I don't think you'd go wrong with either. Having said that, I have the Tissot and couldn't resist grabbing one of these with black face for an alternative dress watch.

Nick0Thanks Nick! the Visodate watch look really nice and all but I'm not a huge fan of the overall glossy/shiny finish. I think that the combination of the shiny and satin/matte finishes on the Davosa watch is what really attracted me. Since I don't wear dress attire but more casual clothing (for a 19 y/o) the Visodate would just look out of place. I've pretty much decided myself that I want the Davosa watch but I just can't justify the price D:

Nick0I've spoken to may parents and so far it's seems pretty certain that they would be happy for me to purchase it and then for them to pay me back as a 21st birthday present. Of course, that depends on whether this watch drops back onto Massdrop.
