BobrazI just did. It's called discernment. I know what a lathe does. I know how long it would take to hand make...BTDT. I produce items also. I am very good at determine price of quality.
$80...you smoke crak. Maybe $40 and I still wouldn't pay that much. A TRUE 100% HAND MADE .... $200 for a collector easy.

artiii26I don't know if it's like smoking crack. I studied Industrial Design back in the day, and I know about lathe work and finishing, etc. without branding myself as an absolute authority on the matter. I'm honest enough to call it out.
However armed with my knowledge, what I'm seeing is that this price is in line with most independently produced tops. Either every single one of those independent maker is a crook and overcharges, or this $80 is pretty much a honest price, when you produce something in a small shop, and take into account all kinds of ancillary costs, and still need to make some profit (hey the guy or gal has to feeds the family right)?
So smoking crack? Perhaps not.

Don't diss something just because you ignore its provenance and the way it has been made, you're just assuming - probably wrongly - that it's cheap mass produced stuff. Same way you can't compare a $600 kitchen knife made by a knifesmith to a $2 one made by a machine in Vietnam, you probably can't compare a $2 top to these $80 ones. And before you jump one me, yes I do acknowledge that in this world, there are indeed $2 products that have been sold for $200 (ever heard about the pet rock trend in the 70's?) so indeed caveat emptor (hey that's two Latin quotes in two paragraphs! 😜)...
Educate yourself, look further than just the surface, learn about stuff then meaningfully contribute to the discussion. I guarantee it's more fun that poking fun at things aimlessly!
