I just received my Premium leather earpads with memory foam insides for my Beyerdynamic DT990 pro 250 ohm cans. I joined the drop because I sometimes perspire a little while listening as the room where my laptop is set up is not airconditioned and well - perspiration on velour...yuck, right?
I eagerly swapped out the pads and noticed several things.
The Dekoni pads are built well. Unlike the stock Beyer velour pads, these have in a thin piece of stretchy acoustically transparent fabric to help protect the drivers I guess. Unfortunately the Beyers already have fabric there on the cans themselves so you will be doubling up on the fabric.
The Beyer stock velour pads taper out from the inside center which I believe adds to the roominess, comfort and airyness. The Dekoni pads, while are comfortable do not taper at all.
I noticed that the back side of the Beyer stock velours have a plastic ring that the earpads attach to are perforated. the Leather on the Dekoni pads are not.
My immediate impression of the Dekonis were that they were comfortable. I fired up my Foobar to listen to some of the Flac files I have (as played through a Grace M9xx DAC/AMP and then into a DarkVoice 336se headphone amp and was amazed as to how terrible the Beyers suddenly sounded.
The bass was heavier but not in a pleasant way with a boost in the mid bass region that muddied up the sound and stepped all over the midrange. The airy sheen on the treble was also gone from my music and the Beyers suddenly took on the characteristics of a closed back headphone but not a very good set.
Puzzled, I swapped out only one side back to the stock Beyer velours and listened to nothing but the room ambience. I was shocked at the stark difference I heard where the Dekoni side sounded like I had a hand cupped over that ear by comparison. To be thorough, I then reversed the headphones to confirm it was the earpads and not me.
I am disappointed to say that these earpads basically kill all that is good about the Beyerdynamic DT990 pros.
I have reached out Dekoni as the print on the bottom of the lid states that "If, for any reason, you are not satisfied with this product please reach out to us on our webpage or social media and we will be happy to assist you"
Let's see what they are willing to do.
