I've been in the "fountain pen scene" for a couple years now and follow a few blogs from people who are so fanatical about pens I am concerned for their health... Anyway I've never heard of Delta. Well I have but http://www.deltafaucet.com. Parker, Pilot, TWSBi, LAMY, Esterbrook (if you are looking for a "vintage" one), Pelican and maybe a couple others I'm missing. Those are the ones I usually hear about. And they do get up there in price but when it comes to the "best" I consistently see two mentioned. The pilot vanishing point and Lamy 2000 both can be had for around $125--thought they were more than that. maybe I'll finally get one--The one I see mentioned a lot is Mont Blanc which can easily get in the $900 range.
Granted maybe I'm just not following the high end fountain pen blogs and more the random dude that REALLY likes fountain pens but isn't rich.
For those that were looking for a demonstrator pen and then got turned off by price; look at the TWSBi 580 (really easy to take apart and clean) and Noodler's flex nib if you want to try out a flex nib (don't own this one but looks nice).
So if you saw this and got turned off on price, hopefully this gives you some different options. Also the pilot metropolitan that was on MD recently I bought and works nice. Another common entry level one are the Lamy safari. It's what I use at work (well I use the al-star because I like the metal body better) because it's just more convenient to use cartridges and if it "disappears" it's only $30
