There are newer version of this oscilloscope: DSO DS213. I watched fiew reviews of DS203 and maximum analog bandwidth is limited to sinusoidal signals, for square shaped signals safe approximated maximum bandwidth is about half of declared 8MHz and even for slower signals readings will be significantly distorted. My bad. DS203 has 8MHz bandwidth, DS202 has only 1MHz. So... I suppose real and usefull bandwidth will be even more smaller, something about 200-400kHz...

Would this be a good first oscilloscope?

Jackv4546Depends on your needs really. It doesn't have a huge bandwidth but it's portable. At this price range I'd advise getting oldschool used one with CRT screen. So in the end it boils down whether you want portable and new or more powerful and heavy used one. I advise taking a look at EEVblog's video about getting used scopes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTPhuRQBmLQ

I mean it's pretty cool as a cheap gadget. But 1Mhz B/W? For $80? What's the point... you could put that towards a real oscilloscope !

ronmacdonIt fills a specific role of portable oscilloscope. Personally I'd suggest getting an oldschool CRT scope for that price if someone just needs a scope. Finding a portable one at this price-point is damn near impossible.

I can't see many situations where this would be better than a Saleae clone.

fazalmajidI could see using this in the garage or other dirty environment I don't necessarily want my laptop in.

It might be cheap, but it is also extremely limited. You get what you pay for.

Does it directly support an X-Y (Lissajous) display? (Based on the specs given, it appears not.)

dhlt25As long as your signals aren't on a bus that's running at more than 1MHz you should be fine.
