Duluth Pack is incredible. I personally own a standard backpack which has served me exceedingly well for 7 years and a waxed canvas roll-top scout that I purchased in December. I could not recommend a product more resolutely than I do any of the Duluth Pack backpacks, but especially the roll-top scout. If anyone is on the fence, I recommend pulling the trigger. You're getting a high quality product that also comes with an ironclad Lifetime Guarantee that covers basically everything but the canvas. There's a reason that you see dudes in Minnesota bumming around with DPs from the 1970s. Not only do they last, but DP has built their reputation on the high quality of their repairs. Again, couldn't recommend a single purchase more than this.

I can answer these.
1. You're right, the main drawback is the fact that it can be slower than a standard backpack with zipper to access the main compartment. However, I'm 100% confident that nobody can get into my bag without me knowing it when I'm on a crowded metro train in DC. I commute with it everyday and I was just hiking with it this weekend and while I definitely did at first, I no longer find the straps cumbersome.
2. If you're concerned about waterproofing, go for the waxed option (that's what I opted to purchase for this very reason). I have found the waxed canvas to be almost 100% waterproof. Also, and YMMV, but my standard Duluth Pack Canvas backpack, which is not waxed, is pretty close to water repellent. I've never had issues with my items getting wet and I've been using it for 7 years in every condition imaginable. You can also wax the canvas yourself after purchase if you don't like the khaki waxed color.

Dielon12I own several of these bags for canoe trips, the canvas is thick and will keep water out to a point. However, it does soak up the water, so I would be concerned if you are out in pouring rain for a long time, or if you submerge it. I would think that it would be great for everyday use and would be able to hold up. The ones I own for canoeing allow for heavy rain for a couple hour paddle with very minimal moisture inside. I too can attest to these bags.
