WOOD AND MOISTURE
So I ordered Rosewood cup from chan and before the cup even arrives it has already shrunk due to dryness (Canada).
I then had to proceed and put it on a bowl, and put the bowl inside a pot filled with a 1/8 water (as long it doesn't overflow the bowl). Then I closed the lid and let it sit there for 2 days until it gain back moisture.

I also noticed that it didn't technically shrink, what ACTUALLY happens is that wood gets dry and warp against the wood grain, what I mean by that is that the length running along the grain were perfectly fine, but the length that perpendicular to the grain curved a little so my cup opening becomes oval. That was the main reason why it didn't fit. In the picture blow you'll see there is gap towards the middle, but the edge touches.

The moisture thing is a temporary fix overtime it will dry up again. I'm hoping by leaving it in there it will hold the shape.
BUT this also explains why some people have cracked cup on arrival. It's not due to damage, it's because the cup dried up and started creating tension against the mounting surface, and once it exceed the threshold then the cup cracks.
At the moment I don't know what to suggest since I only just got the cup, but this is something to keep in mind for people who live in dry climate like me.
MODDING (OPTIONAL)
On a side note, I'd say modding is generally not required, but if you're picky like me, then for those interested this is what I did. Reason why I tried to mod this because I wanted a bit more treble and bring froward the vocal even more, also the bass in stock form is a little bit bloated so the materials absorb the bloat and reflections from the cup.
search

The grey area is dense open cell foam, the middle is cotton. The foam improves mid and treble and soundstage, the cotton further improves treble detail, vocal and absorb mid bass hump and making it more balanced sounding. I had the parts lying around from Denon D2000 mod so this is what I used, however I'm not sure if you go all foam or all cotton it might work too I haven't tried.
Your mileage might vary, hope this helps.

HydeGreat post. I've been trying to mod my X00 and I'm unsure which foam to buy EXACTLY, could you provide me a link please? Also, where can I buy the cups separately?

CamperIVlol to be honest I found this by fluke, this was just from the left over packing foam from the stormtrooper metal cup I ordered. http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/NZAAAOSw4HVWEzuB/s-l300.jpg
THOUGH I did tried 4-5 different open cell foam from different sources they all sound different (bought some from craft store, also found some from random places). In the end this works the best.
Unfortunately this takes a bit of trial and error. The goal is to look for open cell foam that has smaller / more dense pores. I think my starting point was acoustic foam but it was hard to find small pieces at reasonable price so I just started trying everything.
Another easy way to start is you can just trying layout cotton ball or cotton sheets across the surface and see how that go first. Cotton and open cell foam both have dampening characteristic (dampen bass, bring out treble and mids), and felt cloth dampens treble (if you find treble too sharp you can use this).
I made it donut shape because when I was modding my D2000 with plastic cup, I find cutting it donut shape improve the mids. But then again D2000 plastic cup had some dense rubber material in the middle so it might've done something too. Again, unfortunately at the moment I don't have a perfected formula so might need a bit trial and error. This is the D2000 cup picture in case you're wondering: http://www.totallydubbed.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/DSC02252.jpg
Feel free to ask if you have any questions. :)

HydeInteresting, thank you. I'll see if I can find some foam, I should have some laying around from all the boxes I've opened. I have tried cotton as well but from the looks of it, mine was way too thick and I used too much of it. Example: http://i.imgur.com/rr6C9RZ.jpg
Compared to yours at least, it looks like I overdid it. My observed results were that the mids and treble got pretty recessed which brought out the bass and made it very boomy, so I took it out pretty fast. My goal is to bring out mids more and tame the treble just slightly. I will try felt cloth next, thanks for the tip :)
Also I'm using TH900 Dekoni Sheepskin pads, which don't come with attuneation rings, so I was also experimenting with that. Various shapes and materials: http://i.imgur.com/T8BcEYc.jpg Pads: http://i.imgur.com/nqykz2r.jpg Back-side: http://i.imgur.com/6skR0RI.jpg
I found #4 to work the best with these pads, brings out mids slightly and increases bass a little bit. The comfort of these pads is off the charts however, I'm really happy with the purchase. The sound actually didn't change much, only the amount of bass got reduced by a few dB with the new pads. Mids and treble stayed the same which is great, a lot of the pads I tried messed up with the treble quite often.
EDIT: Just took the cups apart and did what I could, here's my take on it. I used sponge and cotton, cut the sponge into pieces and placed it around the cup. The difference in sound isn't huge, but noticable for sure. Everything sounds tighter, especially the bass. Also the detail in mids and treble has certainly improved. So far I definitely prefer this to the empty cups. Pics: http://i.imgur.com/69LvxRm.jpg , http://i.imgur.com/doo4oJC.jpg

CamperIVlol damnnn you did a lot of experiment on it, good job. Glad to know someone else is also going crazy on the mods haha. But yeah the TH900 cup tend to make the sound a bit more V-shaped due to more opening. I think from what I read having smaller opening in the ear cup (like TH-X00 cup) make it a bit more neutral.
In this case I think you can offset the opening size by using your own attenuation plate (which you did), sort of why I think it's working out well. Though I'm a bit surprised to find cotton bring out bass for you, usually for me I get opposite result where cotton reduce bass and bring out mid and treble.
Also good job on your own foam + cotton setup hahah. You can play around with it with different foam but I think you're on the right track.
Oh and I just got my Dekoni cups too I will play around with it and let you know how it goes. :)

CamperIVI put 100mm diameter foams into Ether c electrostat pads, followed by the original attenuation ring from the fostex stock pads i ripped apart. And then the fostex inserts. Sounds good but god damn that treble still shines through the foam.
