Stax l700 vs this?

Brandon123If you like bass, Stax are not for you. Not saying they have none, but I was just at CANJAM and heard several, including the lauded SR009. Even the dudes in the room said they're not meant for Electronica, Dance, Hip-hop and other genres where you have hard-hitting bass.
tryzubHave you heard L700? That one has incredible bass slam for a headphone that is not U or V shaped. More bass than my HD650, LCD-2, M1060, and HD800. My TH-X00, EMU Teak, and Atticus do have more bass, but the L700 isn't far off and it is still a pretty neutral headphone.

Brandon123Stax L700 are $1400 electrostatic earspeakers, not exactly a fair fight vs these.

i_want_all_the_tacosThat's a pretty good stable of headphones. Are these as good as most of the reviews say? I use IEMs more often but looking for the best bang for the buck, fun sounding closed over ear
Brandon123The EMU Teak has more bass than L700 and it is the boomier type of mid-bass rather than the punchy sub-bass rumble that L700 has. The EMU Teak is a "fun" headphone and really geared toward electronic, hip hop, modern pop, etc types of genres. I think the L700 is by far a better headphone all around, but the EMU Teak has its purposes.
Ngd3Thanks, I have been known to hoard headphones. The reviews on these are accurate. They are very very good U shaped headphones. However, if you are willing to buy used, the best bang for the buck is the TH-X00. Those are often found for $300. If you want a cheap way to test out if you would like the TH-X00 or EMU Teak, pick up a used Creative Aurvana Live (CAL!). It uses the same types of drivers and is tuned nearly identical. One of my favorite cheap headphones out there.

i_want_all_the_tacosThat's not correct. CAL! is similar to E MU Purpleheart. This is completely different headphones. The use different drivers, are much smaller and are in different league. I owe e mu purpleheart and they're not even close to X00.
The ones that are similar to Teaks and X00 are Denon 5000, Fostex 900.
escknxNothing I said is incorrect. The CAL! uses "same type of drivers", being biocellulose (biodyna) drivers. Size is different (40 vs 50 mm), but type is the same. EMU is a subsidiary company of Creative so it makes sense they use similar drivers. I also said they are "tuned nearly identical". I will present this FR comparison: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/243448552313847808/368094768133177354/output.png
If you can look at that and tell me those aren't all similar tunings, then we have very different definitions on what headphone tunings are. Anyways, I currently own all 3 of these headphones so as an owner speaking from experience, I feel the CAL! sounds very similar to TH-X00 and EMU Teak. I am not saying they are in the same league, but that it is a good, cheap way for people to get a sample of what type of sound you get from TH-X00 and EMU Teak. I found my CAL! used for $20 and think it is well worth the price of owning and very much a poor man's X00/Teak. I was simply giving a suggestion to @Ngd3 in case he/she wants to know what the sound signature is like.

i_want_all_the_tacosYes you're right about type. Everything is possible on a paper, but graphs are cheating IMO.
Maybe my EMU PH is defective cause they're sound much worse that X00. While my X00 MH is extremely detailed and fun to listen, EMU PH is lacking everywhere. It sounds like a cheap sub 50usd phone. Again, maybe just mine EMUs that bad..
escknxI'm not a hardcore objectivist or anything, but graphs are helpful in getting a feel for the tonal balance of headphones and explaining what you are hearing. That is really surprising your EMU PH sounds that bad to you. I don't have any personal experience with that one. I just know I have had a few people listen to my CAL! against my TH-X00 and EMU Teak and agree that it sounds incredibly similar. Obviously built and feel of the headphone is cheap, but sound-wise it is scary how similar it is. I mean Tyll even has it on his wall of fame so that should be telling of how good they are.

Brandon123Actually which of the thx00 concentrated on vocals or the teak? I like concentration on the mids. Very picky about the mids lol

Brandon123One thing that's true with this hobby - everyone is right about the opinion!
Brandon123The purplehearts have the most V-shape of the group so I would avoid that if you like mids. I would say the EMU Teak or the X00 Ebony are the most refined so those might be your best bet. But keep in mind the mids are not the strength of any of these. If you are focused on mids there are much better options like HD600/650. If you are willing to stretch you budget, I think the ZMF Atticus is by far the best in that it has the bass slam like TH-X00/EME Teak, but the lush mids of HD650.

i_want_all_the_tacosAppreciate all the info. I think I'm pulling the trigger regardless, but any issues with the cable? I've seen a few people having issues with it and not a ton of replacement options
Ngd3Oh the EMU Teaks are fantastic, but you asked about best bang for the buck so a $300 used TH-X00 is by far the best. I haven't had any problems with my cable, but there are tons of options. Any Hifiman, HD700, or even M1060 cable will work.
