I just got them and does anyone know if these require burn-in?
Oddly enough I've listened to my friend's TH-X00 and I thought it was pretty balanced and when I listen to my new E-Mu Teak I find the mid a bit recessed.
As far as I know E-Mu Teak should have more mid than TH-X00 but somehow when I listen to them the vocal sound far (and on TH-X00 I thought it was fine).
Anyone else have noticed this? Or do I need to run it for a few more hours?

HydeI was surprised by the sound signature at first listen, especially in the midbass area (emphasized) and mids (recessed). After running music through them extensively for almost a week they are shaping up nicely (or I am adjusting to them, whatever it is that happens over time). Particularly the midbass sounds tighter now and less excessive which has also helped the mids to sound a bit more forward. By design the mids are however slightly recessed compared to the other frequency areas so that may be something to keep in mind. Overall I am enjoying these cans more and more as time goes on.

MokumManMan you're actually right on the spot regarding the midbass overpowering vocal! That is exactly what's been bugging me haha.
I was using my friend's TH-X00 and my modded Denon D2000 (I put in foam to absorb midbass and felt cloth absorb treble, which in turn bring out the mids) as reference, so I find either of those have more forward vocal at the moment.
I guess I'll keep listening it for another week to see if it improves. I'll update this later, thanks again for the suggestions!

MokumManOkay so after a week (though probably still not hitting the 50 hour mark so more burn in might be needed) I did notice the midbass got a little bit better (again don't know if it's actual physical burn in or mental burn in).
The vocal got a little bit closer BUT just for fun I tried putting on the Rosewood cup I bought a while back and notice the vocal is definitely more forward on the Rosewood. So just by nature the Teak cup do have more recessed female vocal (I think males are fine) but Teak do have better texture/details in the mid range.
I will make a separate thread later outline the difference between Teak and Rosewood and I'll go more in depth on that thread.
In this mean time this help tame down the midbass a little bit more and it's a simple fix. What you do is that on the side of the headphone they have those slots to make space for the headphone hinge, so I took some masking tape and blocked those slots. What I learned from modding T50RP is that more air = more bass = more bloated (T20RP anyone?). By sealing the gap making it more closed and clean up the bass a little bit.

It's a reversible fix so if you don't like it you can always peel away the tape. I think in general I like Rosewood's sound signature better however Teak has better soundstage and mid range detail so it's a toss up now.
Again I'll explain better in the other thread. Hope this helps.
:)

HydeLOL, sounds like we need a hybrid between the Teak and the Rosewood. Mine have had well over 150 hours by now and while they have vastly improved, the midbass remains a bit forward and vocals slightly recessed, as you say. I will probably give this mod a try, meanwhile I am considering the Lawton Tune-Up mod. It's a 3rd party DIY mod for a relatively small price and appears to address these exact two points. Heading over to the new post now...:)

MokumManI tried the Lawton Tune-Up mod before on Denon D2000, but I think it was designed for the wood cup so I find it didn't work too well for plastic cup. So I had to kind of mod the mod to make it sound right. Though I did learn a lot about headphone modding from modding the mod also trying to reverse engineer what Lawton did.
The mod is one use only so I won't be able to use it on my E-Mu. Though if you end up buying it please let me know how it goes.

MokumManI've been reading around sounds like the driver portion of the mod is good.
But some people choose to not use the ear cup portion of the mod at all or only use the leather looking pad. My guess is probably that the foam absorb too much bass for people's taste.
You can probably test it in stages or just use masking tape to temporarily attach the foam and see how it goes (the tape Lawton supplied is super strong so it will tear the foam if try to remove).
Just a heads up, thanks!

MokumManLOL I end up getting impatient and jumped the gun and ordered the Lawton kit, I've written a short review at: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/e-mu-teak-headphones/talk/1972465
Let me know if you get the same impression or if you know anything else that would make it better sounding.
Thanks!
