Just received my Emu Teaks. I gotta run so I'll make this short. My first impression is that they are the most enjoyable headphones I have ever owned, my past headphones including Denon D5000, D2000, Shure 1540, Beyer DT250/80, Beyer DT770/80 pro, NAD VISO HP50, Momentum 2. Verrryyy airy and rich sounding.

mak2675How do these compare to the HP50s? I've been looking for an upgrade for those.

mak2675What your thoughts of people still using the D2000, is it worth the purchase?
Sound wise, is there an improvement?

desutructionThese are complementary headphones to the HP50. Quite different signatures. My impressions are based on memory, since I broke my HP50's a few weeks ago while trying to adjust the tight headband (which could be an issue for you if you have a large head). The HP50 is slightly dark, although not quite as dark as the Nightowls which I have also owned and returned. The sound stage on HP50 is medium, erring on the side of large, and the imaging is relatively strong and does portray a room feel. It's slightly more focused on midbass to lower treble region, which gives some nice thickness to male vocals. EMU Teak on the other hand is more neutral in this range and has deeper bass extension, yet it still manages to have greater bass slam/impact. The soundstage is far larger and more engrossing on the EMU Teak (has a movie theater feel to it, not too unlike the DT770). The treble is not as smooth as the HP50, but it is a lot more resolving. This is simply a higher class of headphones, if not two classes higher. Now, if you are moderate to highly sensitive to harsh treble, and you can only own one headphone, the HP50 is a great choice, but I would still recommend the Sennheiser M2/HD1 or Shure 1540 over it unless that sensitivity is immense (I am quite treble sensitive myself). I find those headphones to be more resolving and more alive and also relaxed in treble (but not as much as the HP50).

VollyI owned the D2000 many years ago, but I still own the D5000. The EMU-Teaks in my view are far better than the D5000 in almost every way way, so much that they render the D5000 virtually obsolete. The treble seems to be slightly more boosted on the EMU Teaks, but still smoother than the D5000s due to a more fluid and level frequency response. The bass is more impactful. The mids are astronomically better compared to the thin mids on the D5000s, vocals sound more alive and present. However, like the D5000s, the EMU Teaks also suffer from sibilance with occasionally harsh S sounds. Also, the percussion can be a touch harsh sounding with certain recordings, but this is because of the decent treble extension. If you are sensitive to treble like me, they should be fine at moderate listening volumes and I find the presentation to be more both more relaxed and more refined than the D5000s.

mak2675OK, so no comparison with AH-D7000, TH-600, TH-X00, or any T50RP mod? I'm just asking. How's the warmth compared to the 770 80 and the momentum 2?

ZedPottsTo the best of my recollection, EMU Teak sounds warmer, less harsh, but equally bright as the DT770/80 pro and they sound equally warm, harsher, and brighter than the Momentum 2 headphones. I haven't heard the rest of those headphones.
