I am the project manager for the E-MU Wood Series Headphones. I would like to provide some information about the E-MU Teak headphones -
1.The dimensions of the wooden ear cups made from teak, as well as the rosewood and ebony ear cups are different. The wooden ear-cups carved from teakwood are machined to a very thin finish, allowing a larger chamber which in turn creates a unique sound signature.
2.Teak is a very strong and stable wood, which allows the wood to be carved into very thin pieces without sacrificing the integrity of the ear cups. However, the same machining is rather difficult to apply to most other woods due to their lower levels of sturdiness.
3. We hope by introducing the Teak headphones, we can offer a whole new user experience with a unique sound signature, allowing us to differentiate our headphones from the similar models from Denon and Fostex.
4. We are considering the option of selling the rosewood and ebony ear cups standalone, but the teak ear cups will not be for sale on their own because of their exclusivity.
More information will be uploaded onto our website, www.emu.com.

chan_emuThanks for chiming in with additional details. Though it does make me rethink my choice of paying more for ebony yet missing out on the uniqueness of teak. Hmm.. what to do, what to do!

chan_emuCan you elaborate any on the sound differences between each wood? I'm having a very hard time deciding. Personally I think the Rosewood looks best with the headphone chassis/band, but some of the pictures of the Ebony cups on your website are stunning.

chan_emuHow will you handle selling the standalone cups. There's 2 days left on the drops. Will it be through the e-mu website?

chan_emuThank you chan_emu for making your presence known on this forum. I am sure there will be a few more questions others will prose. In regards to the teak, I myself was inclined towards this wood as its density and the ability to not absorb moisture will help it deal with humidity variances. The insight towards its chamber being larger implies more area therefore a slightly lower resonance frequency tuning (Fb) but with less damping. I anticipate the bass being deeper extension with the teak. The mentality of the sound of wood is backwards within a speaker chamber as one generally tries to not "hear" the box and in fact is technically adding artifacts. On that note wood generally has better accepted resonance than plastics.
I am sure there will be plenty to buy the rosewood and ebony chambers extra to play with. In fact it would emphasize the unique difference in the "Teak" custom chamber. Since we are on the topic of wood, Is the teak a natural finish preserved with oils or lacquered or polyurethane finish? There are pros and cons to each when in regard to teak specifically. (search yacht care)
More importantly, is there any test data for the "Teak or Walnut" with frequency response with phase, Thd at various volumes of input, impulse response, impedance chart etc. based on a Test Head? If so can you post a link? No offense but the sales brochure is pretty vague with only the basics posted. Contrary to some superstitious audiophiles, Test data actually helps sell products.
In regards to the walnut, Are they a Creative Aurvana live 1 or 2 variant with walnut chambers?

chan_emuWould also like to know the sonic differences between the different cups, as this definitely has an impact on the choice of cups during the duration of this drop

chan_emuThank you for the additional design details. I change my order from ebony cups to teak cups, expecting the larger cup volume will give slightly deeper bass, thinner cup walls will give little bit more euphonic resonnance sound, to distinguish it more from my more neutral T1. I suppose the rosewood and ebony cups will sound more neutral?
Teak seems to be preferred by people from many South-east Asia countries as material for making furnitures. I think the Audio Technica W1000Z also use teak cups.

chan_emuCan you possibly elaborate more on the ear cups? I am quite sure that more than a few of us here would love to get the other ear cups as well if the price is reasonable and easy to change. How are the ear cups assembled onto the headphone frame? Thanks!

chan_emu@chan_emu Could you provide some info on the sonic differences between the cups, especially which one might have a more present mid-range? Also, uploading some FR graphs would be helpful too, as I'm concerned about the highs being too fatiguing if they are more V-shaped than the TH-X00's. Tagging @fjrabon for input on this.
Thanks!

iMeMoodiI have only heard the original teak version, not the other cups. Like I've said before, the highs split the difference between the THX00 and TH900.

iMeMoodiall seem to sound a bit more V shaped than the x00. Teak though is most balanced. Rose/Ebony are more V-shaped.

fjrabonThanks for the reply. Somehow I was only seeing 9 pages of comments before I posted. Now I see my questions have been answered in the next two pages that I was able to access after this comment. Strange!

UzuzuYou are better off buying teak first and then buying other stand-alone, as teak are exclusive as the rep said.

iMeMoodioh yeah shoot. Well then teak it is. I guess because they are less 600/900 than the ebony they're the most unique why not p.s. I'm hoping for a dark pair of teak may the gods above help

UzuzuExactly. I moved from Redwood to Teak for the same reasons. Closer to what I think I would like. I can always switch later on.
I hope there are some mods to have removable cables by the time my cables break down.
