How do these directly compare to the Fostex Massdrop X00 Mahoganys?
From what I can gather, it has very similar sound depending on the wood.
TH-X00 to my ears: -lush mids with a pack of info on the L and R of your head. -clarity and imaging of the sound was immediate to me and I loved that. -Bass was punchy and tight--nearly as good as planars like from a HE-400i. Love the bass. -Smooth sounding and I don't think I had too much of an issue with the sibilance of the TH-X00. -Sound stage was more than adequate from semi-closed pair of cans.
Is it worth snagging a pair of E-MU teak Ebonys if I already am ecstatic about TH-X00 Mahoganys?
There isn't too much literature on E-MUs Ebonys compared to the TH-X00 line-up and I would hate to be redundant and have 2 headphones with the same sound.
Thanks!

evolotusMy buddy and I compared my Emu-teask to his thx00 mahogany on a schiit magni and modi. I found, surprisingly, that the teaks had deeper, more impactful bass, and had a warmer sound overall. It's hard to describe, but when listening to the thx00 I just felt like there was something missing in the sound. It didn't sound as satisfying or full. After comparing the two, I was glad I got the teaks. I will say that I way preferred the cable on the thx00, It's way more supple, and stays where its put rather than slowly uncoiling due to how stiff it is.

evolotusI used to own the TH-X00, but sold them and got these instead. They are almost identical, but the E-MU Teak has less bright treble, slightly warmer mids, and very slightly less bass/sub-bass. The treble on the TH-X00 gave me headaches because it was too bright whereas the E-MU teak does not, even at high volumes. Both have cables that are way too long and heavy but at least the E-MU's is removable so eventually I can find a replacement.

BearWithHeadphonesThat's so interesting, because the TH-X00 mahoganies that I got don't bother me with the treble at all. And of anything, bright or peaky treble is the thing I hate most in a headphone or IEM.
So maybe they are different from sample to sample, or maybe it's brought out more depending on the amp and system you are using?
So right now, I find the TH-X00 just fine to my treble sensitive ears, though I know they may vary from sample to sample, and on different systems (I have used mine on the MicroZotl2 that dropped here a short while ago, an original but modded MicroZotl from about 2000, and a Gustard H10 with full Burson V5 upgrade). Again, hot treble and silibance are a killer for me, so I'm not sure what the difference may be.
I also received my E-MU Teaks from the last drop a couple of weeks ago. I'm excited to try them out, but alas have been busy with a new baby!

K.T.NI own both and my amateurish impressions are that the THX00's have noticeably more bass, the Teaks have more upfront mids and wider soundstage. Definitely prefer the Teaks.

BearWithHeadphonesThat's interesting. I own both the TH-X00 (original mahogany) and the E-Mu Teak (with rosewood cups) and I hear the reverse effect. They are very similar but the TH-X00 sounds warmer and highlights the mid-range while the Teaks seem to more emphasize the upper treble range to me. That said, I appreciate the nuanced differences and enjoy listening to both.

mapotofuThe rosewood cups are supposed to bring in some of that traditional V-shaped FR that the TH-X00s are known for, turning the E-MUs into something closer to the Fostex. The teak cups specifically are the outlier here. As a ebony owner, that's why I ordered them.
