"...healthy, easy-to-use alternative to BPA-loaded packaged popcorn..."? What nonsense is this? Massdrop descriptions are spreading pseudo-science FUD now?

My wife picked this up at a retail store a few months ago. We tried it multiple times, with fancy kernels, with cheap fresh kernels, and with some plain ol' orville kernels. It never popped properly. Routinely only about 1/3 of the popcorn was edible, with 1/3 being unpopped and 1/3 being burned. We varied heat settings on the microwave, tried different durations, etc. Seriously, we probably made about a dozen batches trying to get it to come out right, but to no avail. We'll be going back to our stovetop method, even if it takes a little longer.

jollyandyKernels popping or not is not really affected by the container as the heat is transferred directly and not through container. I suggest drying your kernels and then trying. We've been using this pot for few months now very frequently and all kernels we put in it, be it store bought or our own homegrown, popped just fine. Very small percentage remained, but that's true with every method.

Anybody who bought one in the previous drop have a comment? Good/bad/other?
Great, thanks for the information.

merckywatersJust go by trial. 2 tablespoons of kernels. Perhaps some salt and touch of water to help it stick and shake the bag. But all you need to do is add kernels to a lunch bag. Microwave on high for about 2 minutes until it stops popping. If the pop corn burns you did it to long. If you have unused kernels you can put it back later to pop them. Let the hot air escape so the steam does not burn you.

Seriously, just put some corn kernels in a metal pot, put some butter in there, put the lid on, and turn on the heat. Swirl the pot once in a while so the kernels don't burn, and wait for them to pop!
Micro ?! Wheres the option for large or jumbo ? This seriously wont cut it for movie night.

This is interesting. I use a cast iron skillet for which I've got a good-fitting glass lid, but this may have an advantage: easier to add spices. I use olive oil rather than butter, so it'd have to go into the base. With the cast iron, the spices will burn. With this? Not sure, but probably not. HOWEVER, the Amazon reviews on this are not encouraging. 24% 1-star reviews, many citing serious durability issues....handle breaking off. Others report failure to pop; this suggests to me that it's a power issue, but also potentially a style issue. If you have a low-power small microwave, then it may be that oil is required, or that it may not work well. May not work with old-ish kernels, too. Here's a comment from a 5 star review, that also comments about the thinness elsewhere.  I have a 1000watt microwave, and I make a one and a half batch, cooked for 3 minutes 15 seconds. I put a tablespoon of butter in the top, and I have no issues with soggy popcorn, and almost all kernels pop. The glass needs to be completely cool, and no water anywhere for everything to work properly. Also of note: the company has some other models, including some with plastic on the bottoms. (SHOULD be silicon, the cheap gits!) A reviewer notes you need a rotating-base microwave...which makes a lot of sense.

I went silicon instead. There are some caveats; it's actually quite easy to mess up a batch, but that's a microwave issue, not a materials issue. I just figure, why risk the breakage? Especially given the size of the bowl, and the length/thinness of the handle.

CraigLewisNo reason. This one was the first I found about and price + shipping was really decent than getting anything else. So I went with that. No other particular reason.

It's just two more bucks to get it at Amazon with Prime 2-day shipping. And they're very good about returns.
