Got mine today and thought I wouldn't get a chance to try it until after the first 12 hour charge. Turns out the M5 comes charged and topped off in less than five minutes. I confirmed this with EcoReco and they recommended that I let the battery deplete almost completely before recharging at least twice.
How the M5 handles hills was my biggest fear and I am happy to say that my first ride over the 59th street bridge was a big success! No problem accelerating the LONG climb up for me. I had read from several internet sources that hills was a no-can-do, but it looks like it can manage my 140 lbs pretty well.
Interestingly, going downhill was not the freewheeling experience I was expecting. I found that I still had to throttle to get speed going downhill and when just rolling the M5 with the power off, I can hear a whirring sound and a slight feeling of resistance from the wheels. I'll call EcoReco tomorrow and ask about that.
Really glad I went with the M5. NYC road conditions are NOT smooth but the M5 securely handles them very well. Surfaces I would not even think of going over with my Xootr MG were just gentle rumbles -- grumbles if you will -- under my feet. My short test drive a few weeks back felt cushier and I suspect that once the suspension breaks in a bit, the ride will get even smoother.
It was dusk when I took my first ride so I never went full throttle due to not seeing the quality of road in front of me, but nevertheless the acceleration I did experience was pretty awesome. For my own safety (and others) I hope I don't get addicted to those bursts of speed. Also made a note to get a flashing light for the back fender. Every biker had their flashers blinking and I definitely felt I was not looking out for own and everyone else safety.
The M5 is no lightweight, nor is it excessively heavy. It's weight will be a negative when you're not just going from A to B, but also exploring in-between. Having said that, I do feel the mild heft adds to the feeling of stability while riding it.
Lastly, I'll comment on the audio experience, or the lack of it. Except for the whir of the engine and riding over particularly rough pavement, I barely noticed it at all. The sound of the wind on the bridge all but drowned out any sounds the M5 was making.
Needless to say, a very satisfying first ride for me! I hope everyone here will have a similar story!
