Hello. I have received package with SMD diodes. Is it good idea to buy through-hole diodes and use them? On which side through-hole diodes should be soldered? On which side SMD diodes should be soldered(if I find somebody who can solder it)?

zzz3000Take a look at the assembly page, I think that it answers most of your questions. https://www.massdrop.com/ext/ergodox/assembly
Step 2 Specifically: "Solder the diodes onto the *backside* of the PCB" "NOTE: Kits contain both surface-mount and through-hole diodes. *It is recommended you use the surface-mount diodes as the through-hole diodes create spacing issues* in Step 10 (the sandwiched plate does not sit flush against the PCB surface). If you do use the through-hole diodes (again, not recommended), you will have to clip the solder joint very close to the PCB surface so that the sandwiched plate is as close to the PCB as possible."

zzz3000It's not as hard as you might think. I used solder with a thickness of 0,5 mm. And a soldering tip of 1,2 mm. There is a video on youtube that shows two ways to do it. Search for "Ergo-Dox keyboard assembly". The side with the stripe goes to the square. Look out: the orientation is different for the left and the right keyboard.

dennis_pHello! Did you use only solder and a soldering? Because if this video's watched at 2:25 min(on youtube video "Ergo-Dox keyboard assembly") the master uses some a syringe and a vacuum cleaner. How is it possible to do the same without them? And how did you remove a redundant solder?

zzz3000They were using solder paste and a hot air rework station probably. I used solder paste and a traditional soldering iron an had no issues (note that you'll likely want a fine tip). However if you are new to soldering, the main issue you may see would be burning the board a bit (you can see that MD even did on their teensy in some places).
