This type of selling platform underscores why ESEE will not sell direct to Amazon, Planet Optical or Massdrop.   When a seller drives the price to below where any dealer can sell and then 'owns' that market they drive all other dealers out.  The result is an unhealthy market where the price is so low the designers and manufacturing comapnies will not longer design and supply product.  The result?  You, the consumer, lose.    It is great for the consumer in the very short term.  But selling platforms like this are short sighted and not concerned for a healthy market.      The other less obvious negative here is these selling platforms have no knowledge of what they are selling.  You cannot call and ask a technical question and get an answer based on knowledge and experience with knives and the outdoors.   The folks at ESEE are pure capitalists at heart and all businesses have to make a profit to be viable  but this type of selling is about killing all competition ultimately leaving the consumer with no choices.      Just food for thought when you go looking for the cheapest price out there.  Buy from authorized ESEE dealers. MikePerrinwith all due respect, I don't understand. The price of the knife comes to 31.74 if I buy from massdrop. If I buy the same knife from bladehq the price is 29.95--31.95 depending on handle color. What is the problem? Most people complain that massdrop doesn't give much if any discount compared with other retailers. The points about buying knives from a knowledgeable knife store owners is valid, but I have never felt the need to call just to chat with someone about a product. If this were the D2 version for this price, then I would see your point, but this price doesn't appear to hurt anyone.

MikePerrinBut isn't that the most American thing possible? Kill competition or absorb it and reap maximum profits.

MikePerrinAll this site does is cut out the middle man (or minimize it). Knife manufacturers still get the same profits (or better, I'd argue). Competition is unchanged due to the fact that these are limited time and quantity drops on random goods.

MikePerrinSorry Mike, but when the dealers are uncompetitive in my local area with comparing to buying from over overseas dealers with international postage/shipping, then I will not give them my business.
From local AU dealers, a BRK1301B costs AUD$70 plus another AUD$10 postage. This is landed from Massdrop at just under AUD$52. If the dealers did not ream us on price without lube then I would have far more agreement with what you are saying.
$10-15 extra in local currency, then I would not care, but this deal is saving me almost 40% off local price including postage so this will win. Wasn't going to buy this before your comment but I will be now.

MikePerrinI don't buy from Massdrop because they have the lowest price (they often don't).. I buy because they present a short list of varied items each day, I look over it, and sometimes I see something I want to buy.
I've never owned or handled an ESEE knife, but I saw this one and might get one, and if I like it, I'll be getting more and recommending them to others. I usually buy from BladeHQ or other dealers once I have a specific item in mind.
(Also I've never had a technical question about a knife, to be honest.)

Monsta_AUKnife companies have some thing called map pricing. A dealer buys the knives at dealer prices and they have to advertise them no less than the price set by the manufacturer. This is so that Walmart can't sell them all say $5 more than dealer pricing. This makes it so that the small shops have an advantage because they won't ever sell as much as Walmart especially at those lower prices, so it keeps them in business.
Now there is some ways around this. That's the price they have to advertise as, but anyone can ask for a lower price and if the dealer needs to make a sale they can do that. The manufacturer doesn't really like that. But they can't keep track of it. Usually if you find a place that you only do business with they will do this for you. While they are less likely to do this for people who shop for bottom dollar and have no dedication to one shop.
Hope this helps understand a glimpse into part of the knife market.

anonomousI understand it, my point is that much 'map pricing' is made up by manufacturers and it's arbitary. The great thing about MassDrop (and Amazon with appropriate delivery address) is that I can buy from other regions and save large amounts. Like I said, 40% saving without trying (and the parcel being consolidated and sent cheaply).

MikePerrinNice to see you jumping in here and defending your overpriced differentially heat treated 1095. I have one of your fixed blades, Wild Boar Killer, or something to that effect. I really like the knife, even if I'm too old and decrepit to go after one with nothing but this knife. Maybe a tracked, armored vehicle with .50 caliber...or surface to surface missiles. I like the RAT1 far better than that Avispa or Zancudo. I have both. EDLIDs.
