What’s an Imlay and why do I wanna spend sixty-five bucks to cut one up?

This is a specialized tool. not a casual carry knife, like an Izula that someone took into their workshop and modded it up for rope climbing. The retention strap keeps it within reach, the serrations let it saw even with a short blade, and the tip is sheared off because when you're swinging around on a rope it's a little easier to accidentally stab something you don't wanna stab. the skeleton nature is a nod to the fact that when you're rock climbing, weight matters. If you can see yourself in a similar situation -- you travel light, you might need to cut ropes very quickly but not a whole lot else, you hate accidentally cutting yourself, and your life might depend on your knifework so you want it to be well made and there when you reach for it -- then maybe go with the Imlay. If you just want a good neck knife from this manufacturer, though, pick up the Izula. Thank me later. Hella good blade and it'll be better in the round.

I think some of you are missing the intent of this, which is to be a backup/rescue knife. I would need to test that retention system, but it appears this could be a good knife for wearing on a PFD while on the water kayaking/canoeing, etc. 440c is a great choice for this application, requiring minimal care to keep it rust-free and it will stay plenty sharp enough for when it's needed. The blunt-tip blade is to prevent puncturing yourself or someone else during a rescue situation.

Good points, particularly on the retention system. I hadn't really looked at it because I didn't like the shape of the knife. Thanks for the perspective.

NotsurewhyibotherNo problem. Part of carrying a nice rescue knife is figuring out how to keep it from ending up in the drink at some point. I use an easily-replaceable elastic band to hold mine in the sheath. So far so good, through multiple rough swims.

Really Massdrop? At least do better research... you shouldve sold the Izula which is the mainstay for Esee. A massdrop 440C exclusive color Izula. You're welcome. Make it happen.

I'm pretty sure the Drop buyers are sitting there going 'yeah, no shit'. The Imlay is a specialist's knife. I don't climb rocks or rappel down canyon walls, so the Imlay's specialization isn't important to me. The Izula on the other hand is one of ESEE's most popular knives, it's routinely on peoples' 'must own' list, and it works in a whole wide range of situations where it'll outperform something like the Imlay. I, too, would rather have an Izula over the Imlay, which is very specialized, almost like a dive knife, and looks kind of fiddly. The issue is that ESEE doesn't need Drop to sell as many of them as they want. They sell the Izula like hotcakes. They don't need to offer anyone else a deal that'd undercut their already high performing retailers. They, or one of those retailers, are only going to offer it to Drop if they have a bunch on hand that needs to move, or if Drop is willing to pay a price for them that leaves Drop very little margin even if they price it slightly above market. Deal sourcing 101. The Imlay, because it's much more specialized and less attractive to a broad audience, has been kicking around a bit and there's less natural demand for it, so people have it in their inventory when Drop come calling for a deal. That's why it's here instead of the Izula.

$100 for 440c stainless steel!? Yo, Massdrop must be smoking some fire hash oil these days! With these rediculous prices set on drops for items of sub Par quality that can be found elsewhere for way cheaper asking price, one must wonder what strain they be puffin' on, and can I get some? For real, hook a brother up with some stanky danky! You guys must be so high right now. I wanna be that high too. Otherwise you're just a fool or actually retarded if you purchase this knife. Okay, where's my bong...
