I loved these way back when it was a single size. Nowadays the standard are way too small (no noise suppression) and the large are too large (painful). Very disappointed. Buy small - no good. Buy large - still no good. Cut the third flange? Have not tried that so cant comment. I recently got Earasers musicians earplugs and am happy with how the medium size fits and works really well and better performance at loud concerts and on airplanes. If Etymotic could produce a medium I would still want some, they are slightly more convenient to put in and take out and are cheaper. The Earasers are better in other ways but finicky to put in. Might as well have different options for different needs.
I use these in warehouses and construction sites all the time and I love them. I can have a conversation but they will take the edge off of sharp nasty sounds.

Also use ‘em in movie theaters.
Do these have any actual rating (e.g. BS EN 352-2:2002) or are we just relying on the "they definitely block 20db"?
got in on the drop and finally used them this past Friday. I should have used them on 7 April when I went to see The Damned. I had a ringing right ear for at least a day, if not two after the show. I did pop them in for The Pixies and while I didn't have ringing in my ears, the sound was muffled a bit. Not as bad as the foam earplugs would have done, but more muffled than I expected. I picked up two pairs (one for the wife and one for me) and she stated that they helped, but her ears still hurt. I should mention that we were in the 5th row, and a gigantic speaker stack was about 15 feet in front of us.
Just a heads up to any of you who joined this drop and picked the Standard size:

IT'S WAY TOO SMALL. Get the Large instead.

sure, Standard size might fit you just fine. it is possible, however, that you're not getting the best SEAL.

I always recommend the Large, because you can easily cut one of the flanges if it's too large. seal is still good even without the third flange of the tips.
can't do nothing if the Small size is too small though...

FWIW, I wound up getting the Standard/Small size and find them a VERY tight fit, can barely even get them in, so I can't fathom how cutting the largest flange off a Large would help if even the smallest flange on the tip of those is already too big.

I'd say as a rule of thumb, consider how a Q-Tip fits the entrance to your ear canal; if it's at all snug, go with the Standard/Small size, but if it can rattle around really loosely in there, go Large. (Yes, it's a bad idea to stick Q-Tips or anything else into your ear canal, but I'm talking only about as deep as these plugs would go anyway.)
I think this drop is actually for ETY-Plugs, as shown in the photos and mentioned in the description, not for the ER-20XS as one could infer from the drop title. Note the end of the URL for Etymotic's own ETY-Plugs page:
http://www.etymotic.com/consumer/hearing-protection/er20.html
From that (and other sales pages I found), I infer ETY-Plugs were formerly/alternately known as ER-20, which should dispel any apparent discrepancy between this drop title and the photos/description. That would further suggest the ER-20XS is not on offer for this drop, being a more recent, updated model distinct from the ETY-Plugs/ER-20 shown here.

That cleared up, this doesn't seem like any deal at all, at least for US buyers, considering Amazon currently lists them for $12.95 with free shipping by default (no Prime needed).
How am I supposed to know which fits me best

I gather the Standard should suffice unless you know you've got particularly large ear canals -- e.g., because typical earbuds always fall out, or if you always need to use the largest flanges provided with earbuds that come with a selection of flanges.

As a musician, and especially as a percussionist, having been on drumline and everything, i have to deal with a lot of loud noise. I've tried using different earplugs in the past, but they muffle the noise, and when in an ensemble environment, that doesn't cut it, because being able to clearly hear all players is extremely important in order to achieve the best balance of sound among the different voices. I've been using these earplugs for almost two years now, and they are amazing. They make enough of a difference so that you don't suffer any damage or discomfort from high noise levels, but you don't lose any quality and can still hear everything clearly, so you can still maintain the best quality and balance of sound. In any music environment, especially in a performance setting, these are hands down the best, low cost solution for anyone looking to reduce noise and hearing damage without losing any quality or clarity of sound.

I just realized that this Massdrop is for the ER-20 Earplugs, but those are not the ER-20 plugs in the picture. Those are the ETY-Plugs. Which set is this drop for?

Massdrop, please update the description to accurately reflect which product this is in Etymotic's CURRENT product line. They don't sell an Er-20 like this now. They sell a variety of Er-20xs earplugs, and the EtyPlug (which is what matches the product pictured).
