not the correct retail price. These go on amazon for $159. And probably cheaper than ordering here once they add delivery fee. I used to buy off this site but not anymore. Not to be trusted.

Damn... Good deal. I would definitely go for it but I don't need a knife in the mid size range. Their convex grind is something I don't have though. Really good knives, especially for cold and/or marine environments. If I didn't just buy a Guardian 4 in M390, I would have to buy this.
I own the A1 & F1 and they're two of my favorite fixed blade outdoor knives. $139.99 is not a must have killer deal for the S1 w/Zytel for me however. It can be had with any diligent searching for less than $125 shipped/no tax with the same Zytel sheath (...and no, it's not from amazon). Had Massdrop come up with the S1 with the leather sheath for around $150 to $175 I'd be all over it. I might come back to it if they don't sell the 100 they agreed to at this time but I'm not jumping in with both feet right now.
On a side note; knocking the knife because of the sheath it comes with is bogus. Fallkniven makes one hell of a knife! But when you pay the bare bones price for a good to excellent fixed blade knife, you get a bare bones crappy sheath. You just do. Deal with it or pay more and get Kydex or Leather, period! My Beckers at least came with ballistic nylon and while they still leave some to be desired, they're still better than plastic, zytel, grn, or any other merchandising name knife manufacturers want to plaster on a 2 dollar plastic knife "carrier/holder" My Condor Bushlore I think I paid less than 50 bucks for 5 years ago is the total exception. It's a great small bush knife but the solid leather sheath it came with is worth the price alone and I figure I got the knife for free. For the $139.99 you're buying the S1 for just shut up about the sheath, throw it out when you get it and buy a good aftermarket one worthy of your quality knife.

TheDeskofBobLoblawI like the Zytel sheath. I think taking into consideration the original design parameters of the knife (near arctic, wet weather) could offer an explanation of why the sheath was made this way.
The Zytel sheath secures the knife without making it too snug. Imagine getting the knife wet and iced up completely in a Kydex or leather sheath.
Admittedly I'm pretty nuts and have Kydex, leather, and Zytel for each of my Fallkniven.
PaLeeExcellent point and well taken. And if having multiple sheaths for our knives is nuts...?? I guess we'd both be committed to the happy farm together Thanks for your input PaLee.

EVERYTIME. EVERY SINGLE TIME. someone makes a point of linking an Amazon link with cheaper price
I do not trust Amazon when it comes to highly counterfeited products, such as the S1. People have been known to return to Amazon a counterfeit item and Amazon is none the wiser. They restock the item and send it to the next sucker that orders it.

Anyway, this is an AWESOME knife for a very very good price. I already have an S1 and am going to get another and jump on this deal.... Two is one and one is none? Something like that.

I had been looking at the S1 and S1 Pro for a while. I’ve lost interest as there have been several negative reviews of this knife. Nothing that would prevent buying it for average camp chores, mind you - it’s a great knife in several respects -
but that question its ability to hold up to actual survival use where it has to function as a hard-use tool.
Here is one such review (from Survival Lilly, if you are familiar with her): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBWf1P7QDzA

Howdy billy,
it's great to have your chime in with important information. I learned something new from you. I'm also a knife aficionado like yourself, and have managed to horde a few Bark Rivers too!
A few points I'd like to clarify:
1. The knife in question (S1) is made from laminated VG-10 (420J2-VG10-420J2). The 420J2 is a low-carbon high chromium alloy steel which adds strength to the native VG10. I am led to believe therefore that the blade steel of the S1 will be stronger than pure VG-10
2. I am happy to part <140 for the S1. But that's me. Others may disagree but hey that's what so great about a free country
3. Fallkniven designates the S1 as an adventure knife. The F1 is their military survival knife. With the blade thickness at 5mm for the S1, I'm pretty confident about it.

PaLeeAlways nice to meet another Bark River fan!
1) Yup, lamination definitely helps the VG-10 from a strength perspective. Doesn’t help with any chippiness, unfortunately, but that in turn can be helped by changing the bevel angle.
2) $140 is OK. I’ve certainly spent more (as well as a lot less).
3) The S1 was created by Fallkniven as a military knife as a mid-size alternative to the A1 and F1 knives. They didn’t get the contract. Marketing pivoted, renamed it, and re-positioned it for the civilian market. From Fallkniven, quoted from bladeforums.com:
”There were some reasons why we made the S1 Forest Knife and I can tell about some. We had successfully made the F1 Pilote Survival Knife and delivered some thousand pieces to the Swedish Air Force. Listening to a hearsay that the late Swedish Army Commander-in-chief wanted a knife for his guys, we made the A1, another large success. Of course people thought that the F1 was too small and the A1 too large! So, we started developing the M1 ("M" as in Marine) since we had had some very interesting discussions with the Swedish Navy. Due to many reasons, we were not able to hold the introduction of the M1 till those navy guys had decided to buy it or not, so we change the name to S1 Skogskniven which in English is S1 (the) Forest Knife. As you know since before, our company is making knives which can be used by many different users and with regards to the S1 Forest Knife, we found the size very, very attractive and not very common on the Scandinavian market. As a (negative) result of an increasing moose hunting in Sweden, hunters and outdoor people in general started asking for short 3"-blades and suddenly, noone asked for standard 4-5-6 inch blades. Personnaly I like the slightly larger knife better since this knife can be used for lighter chopping. Releasing the S1 after a few years of development showed me that I was right - when the knife was introduced some years ago, it immediately became a great success. The handy 5" blade is loved by many but those who like shorter or longer blades, can go for that. Fifty years ago, the 5-6" blades were very common and those who asked for shorter blades, generally picked up a folder. But, entering the urban living, made longer blades "uncomfortable" to many citizens. What we do is offering some different sizes, our ideas of design, safety and handiness. Its up to the customer to choose the size he or she likes best, for his/her needs and liking, since the quality is the same all the time. Offering a shiny or tefloncoated blade and some different sheaths will serve many different needs, using the same knife pattern. Still, we will NEVER offer a serrated blade! No man. Take care Peter Hjortberger, Fallkniven AB )”

There’s a good review of this knife here: https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-outdoor-knife/ — scroll down to the upgrade pick. There’s also good info about convex grind. This is a big knife for me, but I’m in anyway. May end up with the F1, too eventually.

I've had one of these for a few years now and I have been very happy with it.. If you are looking for a knife in this size class this is a good one. I have a few fallknivens and i have found their knives to be high quality and well thought out. As for the zytel sheath, many are critical. I have a couple of these in addition to the leather ones. The zytel works well. They are designed to work in extreme cold and still function. I havent had a problem. They are minimalist but work fime

Ok, so this time it is $134.99 + $14 (international Shipping), last drop was $129.99 but I thought int. ship. was only $10.50...? Anyone that bought last time with int. ship. able to confirm? I find MD's price fluctuations and inconsistancy in int. shipping charges baffling so am trying to keep tabs but have a bad memory....
Picked this up on the last drop that ended not too long ago--must be a really successful seller. Good knife so far but the sheath sucks balls.
