Why would anyone buy a Pocket Top?
Here’s a post by @eccentric_mandalorian on another Pocket Top drop that may help explain...
“... Take it to work to kill some time while trying to beat your best spin time sitting bored at your desk. Amaze your children with how long it can spin. I'm starting to get a small collection of tops going and everyone is always intrigued when they see them still spinning after 5-10 minutes. You're not suppose to play with your knife, it's a tool! This is literally made so that you can play with it! “
Massdrop has offered small runs of tops here Brian Fellhoelter, Steven Robbins, JL Lawson in the recent past and they tend to sell out fast, leaving the community asking for more. This is a rerun after 447 requests to Bring it Back! That tells us the members here appreciate them, so we are bringing them back when we can.
Here on Massdrop alone, there are 13 diverse communities of people who care deeply about different things. Many audiophiles spend $200 to $1000 on multiple pairs of headphones and thousands more on amps to power them, but are astounded that anyone would spend the same amount on a fountain pen…or a few dozen pens. While these communities vary greatly - from Quilting to Mechanical Keyboards, Ultralight to Men’s Style - we hope that Massdrop is a place where people WILL ask questions like “why would anyone spend $100 on a widget?” … if you really mean it.
We work really hard to source the products that members vote for and request to re-launch.
It’s fine if you don’t like them, or don’t understand them, or want to learn more about them. However, we don’t want Massdrop to be a place where people belittle each other for having particular tastes, preferences, hobbies, budgets, etc.

DuaneWeikumHoly poop balls, someone understands that people have different tastes and hobbies?
Personally, I'd never spend this much on such a simple toy, but that's just me. I wouldn't spend anywhere near this much on a pen either (although I've thus far gotten 2 ~$20 pens and thinking about buying a fancy signature pen to stay at my desk. I buy hardware for my computer, and a hell of a lot on audio equipment. I'd even buy some of those travel bags that MD has up right now if I didn't already have a good one. But traveling and hardware is my thing; spinning tops at the office instead of actually doing work (shout out to all the procrastinators out there :P) might be someone else's thing, which is all cool. At least we aren't all hipsters pretending to like cool stuffz to be "different". :D

DuaneWeikumI may not be a Top person but it is nice to see different things on MassDrop because I didn't even know fountain pens where really a thing till i got my own (Pelican m200 Cafe) from Massdrop . Let me tell you the writing experience is out of this world and I'm glad I took the risk of getting one. I also enjoy the vast selection of audio equipment they offer and if it was not for the reviews and comment section with "good" feedback be it pros or cons on a product I would not own half of the stuff I do now . Now I just want to see MassDrop bring in Computer hardware other then keyboards and mice to the playing field.

GodinWhile I agree (but still own one of the really long spin tops. It isn't really procrastinating as these things spin so long you forget about them and just get doing other work. They don't flail around or make sound like other tops they just keep spinning.

DuaneWeikumIt's human nature to look strangely on something that defies your perception of what is normal. I own a whopping $300 Lambda [W] Tungsten Special Edition Top and yet I'm amazed at the amount of money people will pay for a tiny old postal stamp.
We appreciate beauty and how we enjoy life in many different forms. I love the beauty of music and the fun of playing with novelty items and do not mind paying the price if I could afford it. Some love the beauty of automobile, fastest Intel CPU, stamps, antiques, camera, traveling, sky-diving, fine dining, luxury fashion brands, or dating high-maintenance gorgeous women in lieu of marriage, and so on. Even money has its own beauty and some will simply hoard it and live frugally just so they can appreciate the beauty of seeing their money grow in the bank accounts. And each one of us will save money or even motivate to make more money to pay the price to enjoy our personal choice and definition of beauty.
And still, we remain baffled at other people choice of personal beauty and their willing to pay the price that is beyond our perception of "fair" price.
As human, our personality will dictate how we express our "bafflement" in these message boards that are always fun to read 'cause we love to read other people response to see their bafflement. And most just want to express their bafflement as part of creating "humor" so we can all laugh about it. Isn't it what humor is all about? Making fun of other people's difference in a light-heart way to lighten up the day?
But for those few who are more heavy-handed in their comments, please remember the old saying, "try to treat others as you would want them to treat you". All you need to do is to read the comment you wrote as if it is directed to you by someone else and you may end up editing your comment.
Cheers!

DanielFerrerIt is a lovely post. Its just that at this time of year, an $85USD spinning top seems inane and pointless to me.
Same when something like notebook gets the word "Tactical" at the beginning of its name.

HamiltonSandCYou've proven my point. Your bafflement is acknowledged. For those who are not baffled but instead joined to purchase the Fellhoelter top appreciate the quality of the build. This is not a standard issue of a mass-production $20 top; this is a hand-made well crafted top not unlike the well-crafted woodworks you admired in some hard-to-find craft shops. A one of a kind spinning top that could as well become a rare limited production item if Brian Fellhoelter decided not to make anymore tops. And well-made handcrafted products are usually priced accordingly. And this top is no exception.
People who ordered these tops enjoy the fine details of the build as well as spinning these tops as much as you enjoy your own "fill in your blank".
What you see in MassDrop is simply people searching for ways to enjoy beauty when they find it (as a discounted price); no matter how strange it may look upon by others.
Cheers!

Jim_I do have a $20 top that can get anywhere from 5-7 minutes on a spin. The thing is, I will watch it spin all day while listening to music instead of doing the work that's on my screen. I just assumed everyone was as ad as I was lol.

dtw898I enjoy expressing my opinion freely on the internet. Albeit a touch late. I lost interest quickly but came back for a laugh. After doing some research i found he used a metal work lathe to pump these out. Much like they would a $20 top. Unless he's using some space age material, this would have been a rip off. As its also something i'm familiar with (the metal work side of things), this would have taken maybe 20-30mins for a novice like me to make. But as you rightly mentioned, each to their own.
