bunnyfluffyMy opinion is no. You can read the discussion as it has already been commented.

bunnyfluffyYou should get an amp and DAC worthy of the HD 650. FiiO is cheap and you get what you pay for. Find a nice tube amp and power the HD 650 how it was intended to be powered. A good entry level combo for it is the Schiit Modi DAC and the Schiit Vali tube amp. Though I would recommend better for those headphones if it is within your financial grasp to go above entry level. I personally use the Schiit Bifrost with the Uber upgrade and the Schiit Lyr with my HD 650s and the combination is fantastic.

Tman5293I personally would prefer to transport myself in helicopter but at least I don't go by forums depreciating products I have never tried.

AshadeI own a FiiO E07K which I use with my V-MODA M-100s. The DAC and amp in the E18 are of similar make and quality. I speak the truth and you act as if the Schiit gear is so much more expensive. It is not. The combo I suggested is only $220. A small price to pay for superior audio quality. A price that is not much higher than the E18. I was recommending that combo for the HD 650. A headphone that requires a good amp and DAC to sound its best. I know because I also have the HD 650 and I power it with the Schiit Lyr amp and Bifrost DAC with the Uber upgrade. I have tried using the E07K with my HD 650 the result is as expected. The sound is almost muffled in comparison to my Schiit gear. You get what you pay for. Good headphones require good gear to power them. If you want to buy the FiiO for cheap headphones like the ATH-M50 or DT770 Pro be my guest but the HD 650 stands above those and requires gear beyond what FiiO offers if you want it to sound how it's supposed to sound. I merely make suggestion based upon experience. People are free to spend their money on whatever they please.

Tman5293It's obvious you don't know what you're talking about. I've owned E07K, E17 and E18 simultaneously and they arecompletely different products. The amp on the E07K doesn't compare to that in the E17 or E18. By the way, M-100 doesn't need amplification. I owned them as well. The Schiit gear is just not portable, and both the E17 and the E18 drive HD600, HD650 and HD700 just fine (maybe a bit under powered in the case of HD650+E17, but a really good start anyway), and just as good as my O2+ODAC combo (at the level of Schiit or above, by the way). Please, don't mislead people with misinformation. Please, read the specs before talking:
Fiio E07K: Output Power > 220 mW@32Ω /> 250 mW@16Ω MAX output current > 75 mA
Fiio E17: Output Power > 220 mW@32Ω /> 290 mW@16Ω MAX output current > 80 mA
Fiio E18: Output Power >300mW@32Ω MAX output Current >94mA

AshadeI agree, comparison of E17/18 vs Schiit lyr+bifrost combo is a moot point; the latter is not portable. The very purpose of this product is to provide an on-the-go amp/DAC function in a form factor meant for carrying. As Ashade has pointed out, you could get a desktop amp/dac in conjunction with E18 or just a desktop amp/dac by itself for home use.

AshadeI'm glad you can read the brochure. As I stated above, all of FiiO's offerings are of similar quality. I am aware that the M-100 does not require amplification but it does benefit from it and it benefits from the DAC in the E07K as well. You do not seem to understand that amplification is not just about powering the headphones. Sure the FiiO gear maybe able to provide reasonable volume to the HD 650 but it does not share the detail and clarity of better amplifiers. Not to mention the fact that none of the FiiO amps are capable of providing even 1 watt of power. Some headphones, especially planars, require a significant amount of power to sound their best. Also, a quality DAC makes all the difference in the final sound. Quality is not a word I would attribute to any of FiiO's DACs. Sufficient is a better word in that regard. Furthermore, I recommended the Schiit combo for the HD 650 and therefore the question of portability does not come into play as the HD 650 is not a portable headphone. For headphones intended for portability I see no problem with the FiiO units though there are far better options out there. Also, FiiO themselves list on their spec pages that those amps that you gave specs for are not to be used with headphones with over 150Ω of impedance. The HD 650 is a 300Ω headphone. It is far more power hungry than any 32Ω headphone as you have listed specs for. This is my main reasoning behind recommending the Schiit Vali. Not only does it provide more detailed and clear sound than the FiiO units, it has significantly more output power. Here's the specs to prove it since you are so obsessed with them. Notice the power output at 32Ω is almost 3 times that of the FiiO units:
Frequency Response: 20Hz-20Khz, -0.2db, 5Hz-100KHz, -3dB Maximum Power, 32 ohms: 650mW RMS per channel Maximum Power, 50 ohms: 550mW RMS per channel Maximum Power, 300 ohms: 220mW RMS per channel Maximum Power, 600 ohms: 115mW RMS per channel THD: <0.4%, 20Hz-20KHz, at 1V RMS IMD: <0.45%, CCIR SNR: >93db, unweighted, referenced to 1V RMS Crosstalk: >-70dB, 20 Hz-20KHz Output Impedance: 6.5 ohms Gain: 4 (12db) Topology: Tube voltage gain stage, triode-strapped, with bipolar phase flipper, buffer and bipolar class AB output stage Protection: delayed start and fast shut-down with muting relay Power Supply: “wall wart” style 16VAC transformer, regulated 60V, 26V, and 1.2V rails for tube HV, solid state, and filaments, respectively Power Consumption: 8W Size: 5 x 3.5 x 1.25” Weight: 1 lb

Tman5293It doesn't matter how many times you say the HD650 need more power, it's not gonna be more true. HD650 is not a planar magnetic headphone, is a dynamic headphone, and is not as hungry as you want to make them. Keep enjoying your Schiit that by the way pairs as shit with the HD650 as you should already know by reading head-fi, and leave the rest of us enjoy well done products like the E18. You might not move your headphones, but some of us do, and therefore portability is the main is the main point here, thus don´t try to justify your comparison.
You are the one that don't understand what a power hungry headphone is, that by the way has nothing to do with impedance. I just gave a comparison of the amp parts of the different Fiio products, that by the way, again, are portable and should not be compared. If I would want to digress I could compare my as well portable solution of O2+ODAC with the batteries kept, but I don´t think is worth it and you'll keep fanboying around. You can keep trolling, harassing reputable companies and digressing: It looks like you are an expert.
Keep going please, we are all eager to listen to your expertise. I won´t keep answering your replies anymore, it's a waste of time.

Tman5293Could you please give examples of comparable portable amp/dac combos for the same price point? I agree Schiit offers great quality and good prices but I think you are comparing apples and oranges. Fiio is known for providing good quality products for a reasonably low price but the main selling point is the portability. If you could offer other choices for similar products in the same price range that would be great (PORTABLE dac/amp combo, less than $200 ).
It's not about powering HD 650's only, it's not a common practice to go portable with 300ohm cans. Also, 650mW is not a full watt of power and the AKM4396 is not better than TI PCM 1798 as for DAC chips. I am a fan of Schiit but I've purchased this because it fits all the criteria I need in a portable dac/amp, which Schiit does not offer.

AntimaHaven't seen many good portable dac/amp combos under 200, but this one is one to consider ($250). http://www.jdslabs.com/products/84/c5d-amplifier-dac/
I've read / seen good reviews on this portable amp/dac combo. Personally haven't tried the c5d, but it's something I've considered. I ended up buying the Fiio e18 due to price and past experiences with Fiio products. Goodluck on your search for your perfect rig!

ChoritekI agree with you here. That's another good option to consider. I little bit more expensive though.
