Does nobody else want this version of the X5?
Sometimes I wish that people could commit to specific tiers.
Just an FYI, the Japanese edition's MSRP is 49,800 yen. That equals about $490USD. Most online retailers I found are selling it for at least 51,000 yen. On ebay they sell for upwards of $650USD.
No way. Offer the original X5 back and I might bite!
no deal.. even at $399. New wheel doesn't justify the extra cost. Amazon deal is preferred.
Massdrop is getting flaky. Don't pay attention and you can wind up spending more money and waiting forever for your order....
Amazon for $349 plus NO tax and 2 day shipping with Prime....much better deal. Case mods are lame - saw one on display in NYC. Not worth the extra 50 large....
Drop the US version X5 for $299. That's a deal. At this price, I'd go iBasso ES9018 32bit.
Amazon have the regular ed. just for $349 right now

Well, if we have enough people to get the lowest price, $399.99, I may reconsider it.

I seriously do not think that "special" scrolling wheel is worth $100. If there will not be another drop on the normal version, I might just buy from "headphonebars" for $359.00.
Okay, Fiio found a new marketing strategy (probably copied from someone else):
If your marketing studies indicate that your new product is going to be popular in Japan, make 2 "versions" of it. Make a slight cosmetic change to one of them and label it as "Special Japanese Edition".
Increase the price of the "Special" by 30%, grease some distributor palms to block parallel imports of the cheaper version, do some fancy online marketing of how "Special" this is, and whoala! Increases in profit margin will impress CFO and CEO! Can also boast (privately or maybe on Chinese websites) how easy it is to screw Japanese consumers.
Not to mention this "Special" may also be popular on some American group buy sites where many compulsive buyers are so willing to take it up their own a........

Got it! I gave my business to iBasso. I hope they are not subsidiaries of the same company. :)

I am ranting because there was a previous drop of the cheaper version (lowest at $299), that was abruptly terminated after 30 units were sold in 24 hrs. Fiio 'explained' they could not handle more than that number!

Didn't even realize this was the special japanese edition with extra bumpy scroll wheel
What kind of headphones can this drive?

You should go visit the dx90 thread on headfi. I'm no battery expert and there's people saying the battery makes a difference in the sound quality. I don't want to lead you the wrong way just in case you believe in that.
The dx90 uses the s3 battery.
NW-ZX1 for the win (at least for me). I love messing around with software to make it better so the smartphone OS of android suits me much better than android OS permutations for music players so I'll have to pass this up (despite the tempting looks). I hear that the NW-ZX1 is almost the price of AK100, but it's SQ is between the AK100 and 120, and a little better than the AK100MkII. For a multifunction DAP, I'd say the cost-benefit ratio is great so the X5 is really not in my ballpark of DAPs (although it's been recommended to me time and again). Just my 2 cents XD
Is this the same as the 2014 edition on amazon? If so, it's only $350 there
MrJoelR
No idea but I got mine for $350 CDN ($375 after taxes and shipping)
Not sure how $400 + shipping is supposed to be a deal either (and not to mention that I believe that's still in USD?)
