Hi, what is the price of this device Fireye HDB Balanced Portable Amplifier ?
Help needed. Did anyone who joined the drop experience that their HDB had no output sound on both single ended and balanced out? It just suddenly happened after finishing a full charging.. I was still using it the night before it occurred. :(
GMtz
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, this happened to me. It was intermittent. It would work for a while, then quit. Sometimes connecting it to charging cable got it to play, other times nothing would. Happened right out of the box for me. I returned it after just a few days and received a refund.
Received mine earlier this week, haven't tried it yet though.
Packaging looked great and overall presentation was top notch. Shipping took much longer than usual for audiophile category, but nowhere near the time of a mechkeys drop. I will test sound and battery life this weekend

Thank you - not being lazy, but I don't have access to any high-impedance headphones right now.
Hey did you ever get to try out the HDB with HD600 on battery?
My amp from the last drop arrived today. Was supposed to ship June 5, but actually shipped June 15.
Not clear what kind of connector this 4-pin thing is. Most balanced amps have an XLR connector, which is round. Can someone explain?

for kobiconn connectors, most people have custom balanced cables made for the cans. That is a major reason why the amp comes with connector parts.
No output impedance, no output power. Not too smart to invest in this thing. But I suppose there are people that buy anthing that's balanced thinking it's better.
Received mine yesterday and gave it a cursory listen after charging. Very clear and lively. Obviously I'm going to give it more time before making any final judgments but it appears to be well worth the price at the outset. Sucks that shipping was delayed but all's well that ends well.
Just got my shipping notice!! Woohoo!
DanLe
Me too. Yay!!!
I suspect they have a practice of assuming shipping might be 'a little late' and just try to placate customers unless shipping becomes 'really late'.
DanLe
YAY!! mine is already in-transit! :)
Mine was supposed to have been delivered June 5. Have not received any status update! This is a bad initial experience with massdrop and 2 more completed drops to go to either reinforce this initial disappointing experience, or to redeem the goodwill and trust placed on these drop transactions!
i've reach out to them lately and i have their response yesterday and i think there is some progress already.. i hope so.. :) geeting excited already!
While I don't have any new information for you at this time, it does look like your order has been packed for shipping! It should be on its way in the next couple of days, and once it's in transit you will receive an email with tracking information.
If Logistics has any new info for you, they will send out an email letting you know of the update.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns, and have a great day.
Regards, Toby
I reached out again today, since shipping is now a week late. I mentioned that I had written once, but didn't get any response other than what appeared to be a generic "We're sorry" message. Here's their response: =============== Thanks for contacting Massdrop Community Support! We do apologize for the delay in shipping your order and are doing everything we can to get this resolved as soon as possible. Your concern is understandable and I have flagged this to our logistics team. They are currently looking into what is going on with the delay and once they have more information, they will update the group via email. Please keep an eye on your inbox for any email updates from our logistics team, but feel free to reach out if you have any questions in the meantime. Warmest regards, Tony ============= Seems ... similar :)

Anybody get shipping notification?

Not yet :\
Can I plug this into my computer motherboard? Or I'm confused how I actually use this.
josiff
Not a audiophile or a pro at this game, but my suggestion would be an DAC/Amp combo with USB input if you were to use it with a computer.
You can plug the audio jack into this amp from your computer, but most of the reviews state the best performance from this amp comes from the balanced in/out. My suggestion would be something else, perhaps the Centrance Slim that comes up once in awhile.
DanLe
I think this is a bit misleading. It seems you are implying that this amps performance would be inferior (or is somewhat degraded) when not using the balanced input/output and instead using the mini jacks. The amp should perform just as well via the mini-jacks as as any amp of this quality would via mini jacks or rca output and likely better than a dac/amp of lower quality.
The USB input (of an external dac) would only be used if you didn't want to use your PCs sound card. If you just want to drive a set of high impedance cans then this amp would be great for use with a PC just as it would with any audio device you wanted to use high impedance cans with but needed a headphone amplifier.
I had purchased this unit in the last drop and am happy with it. However the volume knob fell away in few days and I don't have any contact info of the manufacturer. Can Massdrop provide the contact info of the manufacturer please?
This amp is great. People worrying about power, you can easily drive a pair of balanced hd650's on Medium gain with headroom.
Can anyone compare this to the iBasso PB3 Mockingbird? (Another sub $300 balanced amp)
rmillerx
Haven't heard the iBasso. The Headfonics review says it is no longer a completely balanced amp! iBasso removed the balanced input. This is sad news for those that want to run a balanced signal chain. So it is not a completely balanced amp.
This sounds really intriguing to me, but the lack of published power output specs is worrisome.
read this review. I agree wholeheartedly with it.

I have this amp. All the naysayers talking down the balanced output, you have to hear it. This amp sounds better than most if not all my other portable amps. The air between instruments is beautiful and open. I have the Xduoo XD05 and while it's much more powerful, the fireye has better sound quality. I just wish it had a bass boost like the Xduoo. For $159, you can't beat it. It's $20 less than what I paid for it...here.
Also, it takes time to burn in. When I first got it, i thought it wasn't very good and immediately spent all my time on the XD05 which I bought the same week. After a few months I went back to my fireye and noticed "holy cow this thing sound open and clean!" I've rarely gone back to the xduoo, and I like the xduoo a lot. It's bass boost is really good.

Ah ok that helps clear things up. So for single ended use, would say the XD-05 and this amp are about the same?

single ended, get the xduoo, or creative soundblaster e5. Soundblaster is more versatile.
The balanced naysayers are missing one of the advantages. According to Charles Hansen, owner and head designer of Ayre Acoustics, it also reduces power supply noise. Even battery power supplies have noise. Mr. Hansen designed the audio section of the Pono Player. Take a look at the stereophile measurements. It shows quite an improvement in signal to noise running balanced.
IEMs are highly efficient and don't require the power increase that comes with balanced operation. Like horn speakers, they benefit greatly from less noise. Large inefficient headphones may not benefit as much from the balanced drive noise reduction. They do benefit from the greater power.
Most portable players that offer balanced playback sound better that way. Check out head-fi.org and see all the Sony Z5 IEM owners running Sony, Pono, A&K and other balanced components.

Batteries do generate noise. Read this from Light Harmonic. http://lightharmonic.com/blog/2015/07/24/power-supplies-and-noise/
Just because you aren't fond of something, the facts aren't changed.

It's pretty much a baloney article. That's why there are caps in play. If you notice any noise from a battery powered device, it could be bad voltage regulators, but definitely not the batteries.
I had it, and I love it so much.
How does this compare to the CEntrance by mass drop?
Fireye HDB The Excellent Balanced Portable Amplifier Best Power - Clean & Quiet Sound "In the lower price" Great !!!!!
. . . YOU'RE MUST HAVE . . .
I picked this up on the last drop. On the surface it seems like it would be a really nice amp. When you have it in your hand it feels substantial a nice feel to it and a nice size. It also has a nice sound. The big problem is the power, there's no power with this thing. It claims it can do headphones from 16-600 ohms. There's no way that's true. I used it with the iPod classic. I would have to turn the volume to the max on the classic just to get any sound out. I actually had more volume without the amp then I had with it. I had to return it because of a bad headphone jack. That was probably a blessing in disguise. It does take some burn in time if you do get it. When I first had it I thought it was a ripoff I couldn't hear anything. But after a few hours of playing it does improve. Still when you think of all the amps out there at that price level, for example the Sony PHA – 1A retails for 300 but is readily available for less. It knocks this thing out of the park. My advice for people who like to read this site . Save your money and wait until they do a Massdrop on the Shure SHA 900. Yes it's going to cost you 8 bills compared to the 2 bills for this one. But it's that WOW experience that you're looking for when you're buying products on this site. In this case it is 4 times better than this portable amplifier.

Electronics don't need burn in time. You know a person barely knows anything about audio if they claim such a thing. At most, you'll have burn in time, by adjusting to the new sound, or EQ it to acceptable levels.
The Balanced neysayers are forgetting a couple things: 1. Each amplifier is not sharing the load from each speaker / driver. ie. Left & Right channels are independently amplified as there's no shared common ground. 2. The additional output voltage is possible without gain applied which means less noise & distortion.
I've just looked at the active components on TI & they look impressive. I think this thing will sound great. I'd like to get hold of one to measure & test.

No ground makes absolutely no difference. If anything, it would be a bad thing, due to DC offset between speakers.
There is very little reason to have balanced output on a portable amp because balanced design is usually used to double the optimal output voltage/current without having to redesign another circuit by having two of the same circuit so one circuit "pulls" while the other "pushes". But on a portable amp, there is no need for it, since the limiting factors are form factor, heat dissipation and battery rather than circuit's optimal output voltage. A well designed single ended circuit can blow a mediocre balanced circuit out of the water for portable amps. Balanced design on portable amps is mostly gimmicks. Actually, the same applies to pretty much all headphone amps, because the voltage/amp needed for most dynamic headphones won't exceed the Class A biasing current for most good single ended amps (planer and K1000 excluded). tl;dr "balanced" is more of a sales gimmick than anything else.

Dude thanks for throwing some real knowledge down tell them how it really is lol

Planars make up a sizable portion of high-end headphones right now, and will only continue to grow. Besides that, high-end dynamics can be power hungry as well, like the HD800, or the HD600/650. Balanced isn't just a gimmick, it provides more current, and can deal with impedance dips better. Anyways, balanced is not going to make a massive differenc, it will just be a little more, cleaner power.
