Developed in collaboration with the US Special Forces, these fixed-blade knives by FirstEdge were first introduced to the general public earlier this year. Both the Survival Knife, which is used in combat, and the Elite Field Knife, which is used for training, feature a full-tang design. They weigh about a pound apiece and measure over 11 inches long, with a blade nearly a quarter inch thick that doubles as a pry bar.
Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice of the Elite Field Knife with either a 440C blade or ELMAX blade (+ $25), or the Survival Knife with ELMAX blade (+ $50).
A beast of a knife that’s as good at field dressing a deer as it is clearing brush or preparing dinner, the FirstEdge fixed blade is fitted with coarsely textured, removable G10 scales. Carry it in the included Kydex sheath, which is reinforced with steel and designed to withstand Arctic temperatures, or thread a tether through the lanyard hole at the butt of the handle. At the base of the Survival model is a glass breaker for added functionality.
Hailed by some as a “super steel,” Swedish-made ELMAX is a product of powder metallurgy. In addition to wear and corrosion resistance, it boasts high compressive strength and excellent dimensional stability. In fact, when FirstEdge sent these blades to the US Special Forces for use in training exercises, the military sent them back. Why? The master chiefs wanted something less durable, they said, something that would make training more difficult. And ELMAX was too strong—too resistant to corrosion, too good at holding an edge.
