My friend and I might be looking to getting trekking poles for hiking. We mostly do hiking in the north-east US up and down mountainous/hilly terrain. It would be my first purchase using a trekking pole and I was wondering if one can expect poles like these to be strong both in the vertical (intended) direction as well as horizontally. I say this because I can be rough on my gear especially when hiking. I know at some point I'm going to want to use the pole to get up off the ground by pushing the pole down into the ground at a sideways angle. I want to know if this is something I would need to watch out for .

qwicksilverNo trekking pole is good for what you intend to do.

qwicksilverConsider getting sections of bamboo to use as trekking poles for your rough usage. Either from finding it growing wild, or sections from a garden/hardwear store. Make handles from tennis racket tape. People claim that bamboo is stronger and lighter than just using solid timber. Some call it nature's carbon fiber. You can buy ready made bamboo trekking poles but I suspect you want a slightly larger diameter for your intended sideways force usage.
