The pictures I attached show it holding a 2009 15" MacBook Pro, my resilient laptop for many years, the charger (block stored in the front pocket, cord stored with the laptop), a wireless mouse (in the other front pocket), and an assortment of pens. I would probably have room for a textbook/notebook or maybe two in the laptop pocket. The height of the laptop fits snugly up to the zipper (I don't think it would fit any laptop taller than mine), but I definitely have leftover room in depth.
As you can see, the laptop sits in the sleeve and pokes out of the top at first, but the zipper pulls up over top to seal it in, which is all then covered by the top flap. I'm 6'1" and have the strap loosened out as far as it will go; when worn over the shoulder it sets right where I would want it on my hip.
