Great price, but I think I'll wait for the 2i4. It's been said that the Solo and 2i2 aren't so good for direct-input guitar recording.

GammatronCan you elaborate? As I understand it, the 2i4 just has two more outputs than the 2i2. They both have the same inputs. Or maybe they don't? Would be great to know the difference. Thanks!

MyRiderSure! So by no means have I looked deeper into whether this is true (though I probably will), but these are the two comments from which I got what I've said:
First comment http://dd.reddit.com/r/Guitar/comments/1zkum5/focusrite_scarlett_studio_opinions_home_recording/cfumrqt Second comment http://dd.reddit.com/r/Guitar/comments/1ehpph/gear_focusrite_scarlet_2i2/ca0gdv8
They're basically saying that the line-level gain in the 2i2 is very low (because the input pads, whatever those are, are too small), and that the 2i4 does away with this problem. That and the MIDI are enough for me to pay $25 more.

MyRiderAll depends of how you will use it. If you need this to run some amp simulation the 2i4 has a better Gain. On my side i'll just use my pod and send the processed sound to the 2i2 + a microphone. (Line 6 pod are not very stable when plugued in USB)

MullionI'm planning on using the Line 6 Pod Farm amp simulation with it. Given that you think 2i4 is the better option of the two?

GammatronI just wanted to weigh in and say I've bought the 2i2 to use with a MBP mid 2014 running logic pro x. The quality on that box is pretty darn good for its price. I've recorded a bunch of tracks my audiences seem to love. I've found the mic pres to be excellent for home and portable studio needs.

ninjastrykeGood to know. I really have no measurements or recordings and I've never used either device so I can't make any definitive recommendations or choices, but for me it seems the safer bet to go with a slightly superior model (that I intend on keeping for a good while) for a few extra dollars. I was actually going to get the Solo until I read about possible direct-input recording issues, but I've heard every member of the Scarlett series is of high quality.

GammatronIt's the padding feature found on the 2i4 (or better audio interfaces) that allows for higher headroom. When direct recording, active pickups will clip the crap out of it. Medium-to-high humbuckers, you will exhibit some. For low/vintage output pickups, it's fine.
^ From first hand experience.
That being said, if you're not direct-recording (and using mic -> amp) - no problemo.

jexxersSo not even the 2i4 is good for direct recording? Is there a good similarly priced alternative that is?

GammatronNo, the 2i4 outperforms the 2i2 in terms of the amount of dBs it is able to handle. Take for example:
#### 2i4 Instrument Frequency Response 20Hz - 20kHz +/- 0.1dB THD+N 0.0025% (‘A’ weighted measured with 16dB input gain, -1dBFS at output and 22Hz/22kHz bandpass filter) Noise -87dBu (22Hz/22kHz bandpass filter) Gain Range +10dB to +55dB (0dB to +45dB when pad is engaged) Max Input Level +3dBu (+13dBu pad in)
#### 2i2 Instrument Frequency Response 20Hz - 20kHz +/- 0.1dB THD+N -72dB (measured at minimum gain with -1dBFS signal and 20Hz-20kHz bandpass filter) Noise -87dBu (22Hz/22kHz bandpass filter) Gain Range -4dB to +46dB Max Input Level +4dBu
