Recently my coverman watched a movie called Inception. After the movie we both became interested in the totem that Cob spun and we came upon a number of them being sold on ebay and elsewhere. Then he came upon the Foreverspin and was going to order a whole bunch of them. He has absolutely no interest in social media. Sometimes I show him my Facebook page. I fell upon a little niche of top spinning people who collect precision spinning tops made of different, sometimes exotic metals. They may be hand or C & C made on a lathe with contact points (bearings) made of very hard ceramics such as silicone carbide or nitride which are very hard. One guy in Italy that I have corresponded with makes a combination metal and wood top that one a record spinning for 50 minutes. He has a video which is a sort of materials research...which are the best contact point spin surface substrates to give the longest spin. A number of the top makers are knife makers. I have seen some tops selling on the secondary market for $1,000! My coverman and I have already put together a nice little collection. Two of the best spinning tops happen to be the heaviest and lightest made of tungsten and brass respectively. By best, I mean that they spin as though not moving at all...stable and in the case of the tungsten, he can spin it for 20 minutes. Because I have only 4 toes on each foot with no opposable thumb and weigh only 16 oz, I can't handle the tungsten top. The reason for my post is that my coverman was going to order a whole bunch of Forever spin tops but decided not to because they pale in comparison to the precision tops he has collected and what he sees on the Facebook top sites...that is to say...after having one Inception (read Forever Spin top) there is no need for another one. By the way, we are in the middle of our own materials research to design spin stations that are not only interesting looking but have a surface with a Moh's hardness comparable with diamond...10.
