Quick, only 9 hours to go... These Fostex purples or the Massdrop x AKG K7XX currently available in another drop? Plan to use them without a DAC/Amp however with the K7XX I could swing a DAC into the purchase for the same price....

zypherionI have the AKG K7xx and am diving into these for the better bass and the extreme beauty of the headphones; if you value bass over everything else, love, and I mean LOVE the way the Purplehearts look over the AKG K7xxs, and don't plan on buying any more expensive headphones which will probably have high impedances, I'd say go for the Fostex, otherwise, you really can't go wrong with the AKG K7xx, I love them to death. (Pictures of my setup which I got around 2 years ago for ~$380 USD)
zypherionThese are semi closed. They leak more sound than you think. I can still hear noise around me fairly well with them on. Theyre good as long as you aren't blasting them. Otherwise loudly they can almost sound like open cans.
zypherionFor reference, right now I'm listening with these: Sony MDRZX100

So I'd expect either to be a large step up in audio reproduction. However I'm torn about the price difference between the two. Style and materials wise it's hands down these fostex.. But would someone used to <$20 headphones notice an acoustic difference between the two? Their MSRP's are almost the same, even if the discount is different, so are they even close to on par or do these fostex just crush the AKG?
zypherionThe law of diminishing returns says that the sound difference isn't going to be anything extreme: an audiophile will easily tell the difference between headphones which have very similar sound signatures, but depending on how closely you're willing to listen to your music or whatever you're doing on headphones, you will probably be able to tell a difference but not a major one. Personally I'd swing for the Fostex since they hold their value better, but in terms of sound there is a noticeable difference (as I've read on reviews; no firsthand experience), however, not something that would be crushing or over the top. #RunOnSentencesForLife
