jonoadiI agree with Axiomatik. I have both-- TH-X00 PH and Hifiman 400i--as well as Sennheiser HD650, Oppo PM-3 and AKG K7XX. The 400i is a great headphone. But the TH-X00 is better for most genres other than classical and jazz. I reach for the PH when I want to rock out, and for the HD650 or PM-3 (tied in my book) for any genre. The sound profile of the PH definitely is U-shaped, but in a really fun way that's totally enjoyable . The 400i also is tuned slightly U-shaped, but flatter than the PH. The biggest difference--for me anyway--is you feel like you're sitting on stage with the PH, but way back with the 400i.

jonoadiHi Jonoadi. I have both and they are both excellent. I would disagree with the other two answer. It depends of a how you like to listen. Both have more bass than Neutral, the 400i have slightly better mids and is the most balanced. the PH soundstage is smaller. The Advantage of PH is that they are easier to drive from anything including a smartphone, they wont disturb people close by as much they leek a bit but it's minimal. Very nice headphones. The He-400i are almost like small speakers for people around, I'd like to say slightly more veiled but it's a close call, that's because of the size of the presentation, Fostex is more of a direct in your ear so it can be perceived very slightly clearer, but it's a very close call. Altough they market the 400i to be portable, I think they need an amp to get their full potential, more so than the Fostex. For confort, it's interesting, objectively if I'm just trying em out the Hifimans win, but if I lean my head back on the couch, since it's larger on the back, the 400i get slightly pushed forward, like they go further back than the back of my head. That makes the Fostex more confortable for me in that situation but it might be the size of my head that's small.
