Sorry I've been trying to figure out headphones a while and was wondering if these would be a good headphone for rock/metal music. I want to be able to hear the power of the drums without drowning out the rest.

OlsonpolsonSorry to be gross man, but if you like to hear drums slam and listen to rock and metal, these headphones will literally make you cream your jeans. Sound quality is great and they sound best by far when properly amped in my experience, but will sound okay out of your phone. Bass is fantastic and they shine with rock as long as you're not looking for an ethereal, wide sound stage kind of sound like hd600s or some orthos. These are fun, great quality in your head cans.

OlsonpolsonDo it. That's all I listen too. They absolutely kill. And if you want them to sound like a TOTL set of cans, swap the stock pads for some ZMF Ori leathers and get the Lawton L1 mod but only the driver dampening. For an extra $150 (now $600 total) you have a "close too" TOTL HP. They're now very detailed, highs smoothed to perfection with both bass, mid bass and sub bass all smoothed out where it slams like no other. Tight, punchy and fast.

OlsonpolsonNah, these are pretty good, but i dont think they excel at rock. Maybe the HD 650

RatdogAnd add in custom pad attenuators (NOT the Dekoni donut ring which ruins the sound quality! Looking to make a 'C' shaped piece of manila folder or thin plastic to insert inside the ear opening between the bottom of the pad and the fabric cover for the driver. Basically just making a reflector that goes at the back of the ear with the front of the ear area not covered) if you really want nice bass that doesn't mess with the mids and highs. I do like how the Oris + Lawton dampening sounds, but my preference is the Jmoney pads (which are not an option for most anyone since they are a long discontinued, I bought mine for my Denon AH-D2000 over 8 years ago. ) The Ori's will get you about 2/3 of the Jmoney experience. The Jmoneys (Version 3) do pair extremely nicely with the TH-X00 PH, if you have the opportunity to acquired a pair don't hesitate and grab them if they are in good condition.

Modded TH-X00 PH are indeed near TOTL level cans... highly detailed, extremely clear, excellent instrument separation, and with nice subterranian bass.

OlsonpolsonAs I write this, I'm listening to John Bonham's drum solo on Moby Dick from a soundboard tape of Led Zep's 1977 Houston concert, and I can assure you that the PurpleHearts are excellent for rock and hearing the power of the drums!
