AthtelFun warm sound with a pronounced accurate controlled bass vs a bit colder more analytical sound of the H400i (im pretty sure the HE-4xx is based on it) with a bit more focus on the higher end.
It all depends on what type of sound and music you listen to and like.
I was in the same boat. TH-x00 Purpleheart vs He-400i vs Audeze LCD2C. I'm pulling the trigger on TH-X00 since I am not too analytical with my music and I like warm fun sounding headphones which makes me smile when I put some Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B, DnB, Dubstep, House, Rock. These headphones should fit my preferences when it comes to sound and the music I listen to. These are also semi-open headphones by the way. If you like the Beyerdynamic sound, you should enjoy these. If you are more into the AKG 7-series or Sennheiser HD6-series you probably like the He-400i.
Either way, both are great headphones but if you decide on the HE-4xx you should consider a DAC/AMP combo or DAP to get the full use of them despite low impedence, they are planar magnetics.

AthtelWhat Olaipai said. Have not heard a Hifiman, but from what I heard mentioned, the Monolith M1060 is almost universally favored over the He-400i, and as much as I love my modded M1060, it is no TH-X00 PH. Stock sound is good on the TH-X00PH, but a few simple mods really bring them up to another level. Lawton Audio driver housing dampening and ZMF Ori pads with custom attenuators placed in the pads really bring it up to avnear top end level sounding headphone.
The modded TH-X00PH is as clear sounding as my HD700 with not quite as much detail, but about the same instrument separation. Bass is absolutely beautiful too, massive extension in the sub-bass with VERY good precision and detail, and the huge impact. The stock PH is duller and less dynamic, with slightly more recessed and harder to understand vocals, and a more conjested sound.
This track will show you how good the TH-X00PH does acoustic bass, vocals, and highs, especially when modded:
And for electronic, this is a good one:

OlaipaiThey're SemiOpen? I didn't realize that, Do you have any good closed recommendations? I wanted to get this because I want a good closed headphone since I listen to my stuff loud and don't want to bother anyone. From this thread, it looks like I should just suck it up and get a schliit stack, is there a massdrop closed option? Is th cheap emu purple heart closed? Would that be better than my ATH m50x? That's what I'm using now, I was just going to add a DAC/AMP to it, but I've heard that's not even worth it.

MyTechTripHonestly, they are closed enough to bring public. I am pretty sure they are semi-open due to pads, not 100% sure. Just get some good pads and enjoy them! I'm not the Schiit stack has been on MD. But they are really affordable at 99$ each unless you go for the Modi 2 Uber. I haven't heard the E-mu, so I cannot comment on it. The ATH-Mx50 are nice headphones, not for me though, I enjoy the Beyerdynamic sound signature better. I do not know what type of music you listen to or what you want out of your headphones in terms of sound. But if you want a good closed back headphone, take a look at the Beyerdynamic DT770, DT-1770, Sennheiser 598 CS.

OlaipaiThey are semi-opened due to the cup venting, that gap between the lip of the cups and the frame.

OlaipaiThat link sent me right back to this. The Fostex was actually listed there. It looks like the most appealing headphone. The only other ones I liked were the Shure, and the OTHER Fostex. That's just based off the description there though. THe emphasized base/treble sounds like what I like but I'm really not sure. I probably just need a higher end headphone as a starting reference point. Thanks, I think that helped me just decide on these, I like the purple color anyway. If I did change, it would be to the Oppo for the portability.
I was going to get the schiit stack to drive whatever headphones I got, but now that I see it's in ONLY silver, I got turned off. The Jotunheim seems to be my cheapest entry point in black for $500. The Element looks like the best design though for $350 for me personally since it blends in with my setup. The O2/Dac looks like the best value.
I heard some meh things about the 2 JDS Labs options which made me want to just spend more for the Jotunheim just to have a black appliance. Any comments on the JDSLabs options as I really do like the way The Element looks, but it is an amplifier/dac.... I can spend $150 extra if I need to for the Jotunheim in black.

MyTechTrip" I probably just need a higher end headphone as a starting reference point. " Not sure if i quite understood your logic here, but once you venture deeper into the audiphile world of headsets it gets more and more about neutral sound to analyze and listen to every bit of detail in the song and not so much "fun" sounding headsets. From my personal experience I'd recommend not spending 1000$+ on DAC and AMP. I have heard combos worth several thousands, but I still do not understand the big deal and the increased audio quality and the "visuals of audio quality", or whatever. No matter how expensive, I never thought anything sounded so much better than a Schiit stack to justify the insane pricing. The Schiit stack is very plain and simple. You could just spray paint the shroud DIY style to whatever color you would like. shouldn't be very hard. If not, the O2 Stack is great! And not as hot as the Schiit stack (schiit gets hot, literally) (Massdrop got their O2 AMP on sale right now) And the Bifrost from Schiit is available in black finish and the bifrost is a really great dac if you want to spend a few extra bucks and probably the best in its price range!

VRacer111Nice, thanks for the feedback and the links. I'm actually considering skipping the TH-XOO and just saving for a pair of Mr Speaker AEON ... or maybe saving a bit more for the HD 800S. Have you had any experience with either of those?

MyTechTripFor what it's worth, I just bought a pair of M50's, and I love them for daily use. I also bought a pair of Momentum 2's for my wife, and honestly, I'd have to say that they're not that impressive for the sound quality. They're super comfy and they look fabulous, but I'd rather listen to my M50's or Sony HDR-V6's over those any day. Beyerdynamic - I also own the 770 Pro's (80 ohm), and I'm not sure I love them just yet. Doing a long burn in on those at the moment, but out of the box, I wasn't wowed.
I'm considering passing on the Fostex and saving up a bit more for the Mr Speaker AEON's. I watched/read a few reviews about them here: https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/innerfidelitys-wall-fame-over-ear-sealed
Do keep us posted on what you buy and your thoughts on them!

HawaiiRI have had short opportunities to listen to the Aeon and an HD800 (not an HD800S).
The MrSpeakers Aeon is an extremely comfortable headphone, right in line with the HD700. Hard to get any more comfortable than those 2 headphones.
Soundwise, they are both pretty much different than a TH-X00PH, much more focused on the mids and highs, but also with detailed bass. The TH-X00PH is focused on the bass, but also with nicely detailed mids and highs. Now the Aeon was brand new out of the box, and throughout the afternoon it was getting better, but initially it is a very mid and highs focused can with bass is noticeably lacking - a stock SHP9500 had more low end emphasis. Very good detail and clarity, just wasn't an exciting can to listen to, kind of clinical sounding. Again, this was a brand new in box unit opened at a headphone meet with a setup I can't remember. I also tried it with my tablet and Dragonfly Red, doesn't pair well at all with a DFR...very anemic sounding. So that's my only experience with the Aeon. I hear they do come around well with runtime and proper DAC/amp combo for it.
The HD800 sounded precise, with definitely LOTS of detail, and a smooth sound, but again clinical sounding profile and not for me. I know the HD800S is tuned differently. I believe the earpads are the same on both - rediculously huge pads, so large they actually rest on your jaw. So seal can be an issue - don't move your jaw at all when listening! I prefer the HD700 to the HD800, both for sound and comfort reasons.
But I do honestly prefer my modded TH-X00PH to all three... none of them have the low end of the PH or the precise energy it gives in the mids and highs. EQ'ing an HD700 really helps bring some life to it, but it still is not magical sounding like the PH. They are better in technicalities than a PH, but not better sounding when just trying to enjoy the music, instead of examining it piece by piece... The HD700 is most excellent at vocals, yet the vocals are more forward and just a little less detailed in my PHs... and the PH's have that fabulous low end and incredible enegetic highs at the same time.
If you are interested in the Aeon or HD800S, it would definitely be recommended to hear them on a system you would want to use them with.
