Those who applied a Lawton driver dampening modification, please share your impressions! Was it a trade? Did the headphones loose something in sound quality, or the mod only made them sound better with no disadvantages?

LeopandaBetter in every way with the Dampening, clearer, tighter and well worth it.
However with new ear pads you can lose some of the close up in your face bass which is great if they're too much for you stock. They're some seriously amazing headphones. In my opinion, with the mahoganies and ebony's being lesser in the bass department, adding thicker pads can weaken the bass too much. The PH's allow you to have the best of both worlds.
If you want to go all out, you can mod them to have detachable cables and buy aftermarket Lawtons Cups in a ton of different wood finishes which are twice as think and look stunning however add another $500usd to the price.

DF85Thanks for reply!
I have a detachable cable mod already, now I'm trying to convince myself that a $45 modification is worth it. And I am pretty happy with the stock pads on my ebonies, and either don't want to change the original sound signature by changing them.

LeopandaNo worries, I wouldn't recommend a pad change on the ebonies at all unless they're a similar style to stock and sealed well. Sounds like all you need is the mod and you're done! Enjoy, Mark at lawton is easy to deal with as well. Good guy.

LeopandaDon't need to 'worry' about the driver dampening mod other than not installing the cup dampening pieces (unless you want less forward bass that is shoved back in the mix.) Driver only dampening is the way to go if you like the stock bass presentation. Lawton driver dampening noticeably improves detail, clarity, and instrument separation.

VRacer111I might have read this wrong but did you "not" install the dampening and just the other components? or the other way around. Also Leopanda, If you like Rock, Drum & bass, Hip hop, Dubstep, Basically anything that requires a full fun sound signature these are for you. I've been Comparing these to my Audio Technica MSR7's, They're very very similar in theory, just the PH does all ranges better and clearer. They leak sound too, so everyone around you can also enjoy your music blasting. The most fun headphones I own by a mile.
I've tested them with a cheap Fiio DAP, Onboard sound, my Soundblaster E5 and also Shiit combo. They are not a hard set of headphones to drive at all and a phone will get them plenty loud enough.

DF85Already have the Ebonies :) I am powering them with Audio-GD R2R 11, the sound is fantastic. The difference between this dac/amp and onboard laptop sound is like earth and sky. Can't stop listening to blues rock, spending like 4 hours a day with them.
I love the bass extension, thick and fun sound signature. Though I would be happy to increase the detail and control, I don't want to loose the thick sound. That's why I am asking about this modification just everywhere :)

DF85Must have been tired when posted, fixed it to make better sense. Driver only damping is installed on both my TH-X00PHs (one with the original Purpleheart cups and other with the E-MU Palo Santo cups that recently came in).

VRacer111Makes perfect sense now ;) I may have also been tired when reading it.
How do the new cups go? Any significant change?
I was about to pull the trigger on the sissoo wood cups from lawton but the $500usd price tag held me back. I think it's mostly an aesthetic change which for me... doesn't justify costing more than the units themselves

DF85The E-MU Palo Santo cups are somewhere in between the stock Mahogany and Purpleheart cups... warmer and smoother than the Purplehearts, but better detail/precision in the bass than the Mahogany. Less bass impact than the Purplehearts but also smoother highs. Also 1/4 the price of Lawton cups...

VRacer111Nice to know as I have a backup pair or Mahoganies as well. I just can't justify 500usd for cups no matter now nice they look (more expensive than the headphones themselves ) .This may be a better option I think. Thanks for the response.
