How do these compare to the Sennheiser HD 700?

JustFluxzThe following is based off my stock HD700 and modded TH-X00PH (Lawton driver dampening, Jmoney V3 earpads with custom attenuators) - a stock PH will sound more bloated, muddled, and conjested. The HD700 has a much larger sound stage, slightly better detail, and better attack speed. It doesn't even come close to the bass of a TH-X00PH other than in extension - huge difference in impact and overall bass presence between the two. Mids are nice on the HD700, but no more forward or pleasant sounding, actually thinner sounding than on the PH. Highs are kind of uneven to me on the HD700, really depends on what you are listening to on whether they are good or not. TH-X00PH highs are much more even sounding and have a great sense of energy and detail without going over the edge.
Overall sound of the HD700 is much more analytical, the TH-X00PH are much more about just having an awesome time listening in a very musical manner but still provide great detail and excellent dynamics with second to none bass. I only really use the HD700 for gaming or movies....for music would much rather use the TH-X00PH or my new TH-X00PS (Palo Santo).
For comfort though, the HD700 is one of best there is, everything just works so well on it - the frame tension, earpads, and headband padding are just perfectly matched for ultimate comfort. Stock earpads on the TH-X00PH are not the best for anything other than short term listening. With better pads the TH-X00PH is very nice for long term listening, but not like the noticeably lighter and more form fitting HD700 which just dissappears on your head.

VRacer111What does the cost come out to for the mods on the TH-X00? The 700 can be had for $400 new where I'm at and have been deciding over both for a while now. From what you wrote, unless the TH-X00 is modded, it may not be a better buy than the HD 700.

jaydunndidditThey are two different headphones with very different sound signatures. The HD700 will never be able to have the bass of the TH-X00PH, and the TH-X00PH will never have the detail or speed of the HD700. The TH-X00PH is very musical and the HD700 much more analytical. ZMF Ori pads run $60 and Lawton driver only dampening will runs about $30, at a minimum just the Lawton dampening would work. The TH-X00PH is a much more all around headphone, the HD700 is much more limited in what it works well with, plus VERY amp dependant.

jaydunndidditThe HD 700s and X00's are completely different headphones for the below reasons and shouldn't be compared against each other;
- Open back Vs Semi open - Analytical Neutral sound Vs V shaped with more sub bass and treble - Use of an amp / dac not required on X00's to drive well.
I'd say it really depends on what you want in a headphone, if you want something where you can hear every detail with absolute clarity and wide sound stage and have a very good amp / dac combo then go with the Sennheiser's.
If you want Great looking, fun headphones with plenty of bass and easy to run off your phone or on board PC sound then go with the Fostex's.
I have the Lawton kit for my X00's $35usd or there abouts and they're amazingly good headphones.
I use my Sennheisers and AKG's for Gaming or rock music when nobody is around me as they leak sound being an open back.
Hope that helps.

VRacer111Thanks. I've been going through the thread and the constant mentioning of all these mods and pad swapping were throwing me off about the quality of these cans.
