AvCMOkay, coworker brought in the HD6XX that he just got this weekend and is letting me use them for the day. Initial impressions after a couple hours and switching to my modded TH-X00PH (stock ones are at home...):
The HD6XX does have a certain 'veil' to the sound, not muffled, but like you are very aware you are listening to a recording, while my TH-X00PH sound very 'live'. This is more noticeable on live/acoustic music, less so on electronic music. I like pretty much most everything my TH-X00PH does better than the HD6XX. Impression is with my Gustard X20U DAC, Gustard H10 amp with Burson V6 Classic opamps, and Schiit Loki bypassed. The PH is Lawton dampened with Jmoney V3 earpads and custom attenuators in the ear openings

SOUND
Bass: No contest here - better extension, detail, precision, dynamics, impact, and overall presence on my TH-X00PH. The HD6XX is very rolled off and thin sounding in comparison, not bad overall, but just cannot be compared to the deliscious bass of a dampened TH-X00PH.
Mids/vocals: The HD6XX has VERY nice mids, but this is where the 'veil' comes in. When compared to my TH-X00PH, the HD6XX seems a little shouty and slightly more condensed/conjested. The dampened TH-X00PH is smoother and more lively sounding, with better finnese - and basically as clear, and lifelike sounding as mids from an HD700. Detail is pretty much same for mids, too close to call.
Highs: This where they are closest, but the TH-X00PH carries more energy without being any brighter or less finnesed. The highs carry more dynamics on a dampened TH-X00PH. However, I do find slightly better detail in the highs on the HD6XX (heard in sustain and intonation changes on cymbals and triangles.)
Speed: About the same between them, the HD6XX may have the slight edge, but they are very close. Both are Extremely good with transients, but not quite HD700 good.
Separation/Precision/Soundstage: The TH-X00PH seems to have more dilineation between instruments/sound come across. Not a huge difference, but there. It also has very, pinpoint precision in placement, the HD6XX less so, probably because of soundstage differences. For soundstage, the HD6XX is wider by a noticeable bit. TH-X00PH is very near, basically ranges from ear to ear while the HD6XX noticeably steps outward.
COMFORT
TH-X00PH with Jmoney V3 pads feels better to me. The HD6XX has way more clamp, and the stiffer pads really puts some pressure above and below the ears. The headband is good, but I do feel it just a little more than the TH-X00PH headband. The Jmoney pads have a better shaped opening than the HD and dont squeeze the head like the HD6XX pads do.
Overall the HD6XX is a nice sounding headphone, I like it, but overall it falls short of my dampened TH-X00PH in sound quality and enjoyment. Comfort is not as good either.

VRacer111Both compliment each other well and for comfort I suggest u set several DVD cases/Books in between your HD6XX overnight to lessen the clamp force

DenonFanboyI don't have HD6XXs, those were borrowed for a couple days from a coworker.

JackulaSorry miss. Didn't mean to get your panties in a bunch! Just expressing my experience with the 650. BTW, how'd you know I had a shit amp? My dac is made by the same company!

inmytaxiMaybe dipping your 650 in extra virgin olive oil wasn't the brightest of ideas.

VRacer111What tracks were you playing whilst listening. Difficult to get a reference point without that information. Like a lot of people are saying the sub bass is good - but if you amp your PHs, do they distort/crumble under pressure when you play something like https://foundationaudio.bandcamp.com/track/lion or https://frequentaudio.bandcamp.com/track/breathe-frequent-and-hudson-lee-remix ? The HD6XXs for example can play bass heavy tracks and doesn't struggle - because it simply heavily rolls off the bass. The Beyerdynamics DT 770 80Ohm sounds good at very low volumes, but turn it up and it's distortion city for heavy bass tracks (like the ones above).

purplezorzThese would be two of the tracks I generally use with new headphones:
http://store.vocallective.net/track/so-what
http://store.vocallective.net/track/one-by-one
Listened to the two tracks you linked and there is absolutely no issue, just clean, detailed, powerful subbass with no detail in the songs being overshadowed by the subbass. Those songs aren't taxing at all for a modded TH-X00PH. The TH-X00PH is a semi-open can - the drivers 'breathe' EXTREMELY well and when modded it sounds more open than an HD6XX. Subbass is the TH-X00PH strength, especially modded - you aren't going to trip it up without EXTREME effort...

VRacer111This might be the most exciting comment I've ever read ever! Just need to save up and simultaneously hope the drop comes back :D If not, I'll have to look at the used market. But thanks for trying and responding. I did actually see your comment mentioning the Black Hole track by Adys in another comment section and found the sub bass in that to be very pleasing. Also listened to the ones you posted and they're nice too. I recently tried the Sony MDR-1A and it was refreshing to hear a headphone that doesn't distort under heavy sub bass that isn't the V-Modas at relatively high volumes (I have the Beyer dt 770 pro 80 ohms, Sony XB1000 (maybe they're fake?), Sony MDR-1000X, Phillips Fidello X2HRs, V-moda Neros and the Senny K6XXs). I actually tried the Z1R and put a tonne of (EQ'd up) bass through it for the lols and somehow it just took it and everything sounded crystal clear- (ok fine, not Sennheiser or any other insanely resolving headphone levels), but I can't afford those for a long time.
Anyway, I digress, this seems to be the next upgrade path for sure! Thanks again.

purplezorzA used TH-X00PH is a great bargin, I picked up my second TH-X00PH for half the price of new... and it was barely used - but did have a noticeable blemish in the coating on a cup. I didn't mind though as was swapping cups out for the E-MU Palo Santo ones from the drop a little while back. Should be able to find nice condition PH for ~$280 or less... The Lawton driver dampening is a must do if you really want the best from a TH-X00PH, really helps reign in the clarity and detail while giving much better instrument separation. Only ~$30 + shipping too...

VRacer111You don't recommend the cup dampening but with this mod I found it is actually worth it. The bass response and clarity I recieve is better then stock by far. This is with using the whole Lawton tune up kit, except the hard round plastic pieces (haven't tried those yet). With just the Lawton driver tune up the treble is so piercing that I can't listen for a long period of time. But with the mod below and doing the cup dampening it's actually not bad, it's very manageable. https://www.head-fi.org/threads/th-900-fostex-ez-simple-mods-and-other-fostex-dynamic-variants-x00-denon-more-bass-mid-soundstage-smooth-trebles.802704/#post_12447940
