How will the sound of these compare to a pair of HD650s? I’ve been using them for a few years now, and I’m thinking of trying something new, but I don’t have enough experience with hi-fi stuff to know if they’ll satisfy.

jetteYour Sennheiser HD650s are open back headphones, whereas the TH-X00s are closed cans. The TH-X00s are a nice complement for adding to your particular headphone selection. Your HD650s drive with 300ohms and these are 25 ohm impedance which means you won't need a amplifier if you are using one already. The Sennheisers are great for acoustic and vocals as I'm sure you would agree. The Fostex give you more low frequency performance than you are naturally accustomed to from your HD650s. The HD650s are a bit lighter on the head but the benefit from the TH-X00s is the leatherette cushion that I think you will really appreciate from a quality perspective. Honestly I would recommend both as I have the mahogany and the HD600s. HTH

JediI think the TH-X00 sound very open for a 'semi-closed' phone, difference between them and my closed Oppo PM-3 is huge in that regard. I put some new pads on my TH-X00, they reduce bass a bit and clean up the sound (also increases soundstage a bit). I find them more comfortable too. They're roomier and softer. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replacement-Ear-Pads-Cushion-For-DENON-AH-D2000-D5000-D7000-Headphone-Headset-/261841289456?var=&hash=item3cf6f500f0:m:myOCuiZuvgqDI2_cGW50VnQ

marts_sumCan you make any other comparisons between the TH-X00's and the PM-3's? I've been on the fence about which set of headphones to get. I plan on using them for home use only and not as on the go cans.
marts_sumI have the Oppo PM-3 for the office because there is very little leakage, can the same be said of the TH-X00?

pimogoNo, the TH-X00 leaks - would not consider it a portable headphone. Oppo is a true closed.

TcolesSure. PM-3 to me is quite relaxed/netural with emphasis on the mids, the planar bass is nice but not as much as the TH-X00 which hits harder. TH-X00 has deeper bass and more extended highs, mids aren't recessed but not as much in focus as the PM-3 (which lacks the top end sparkle). Soundstage is noticeably larger on the TH-X00, but at the cost of leaking sound and not being portable. I find the TH-X00 more comfortable as they're larger, PM-3 are quite small and they sit on your ear rather than around it like the TH-X00. Simply put, I'd take the TH-X00 every time if you're just going to use at home, they're a much better all-rounder phone. Add to that the TH-X00 pads are replaceable and different pads can alter the sound, PM-3 pads can't be swapped. PM-3 look great but not Purepleheart great :)

JediThank you for the detailed reply. Yes, I already have an amp (the TubeMagic D1, or something; I got it since it was supposedly made for the 650s). I'll definitely consider joining the drop.
