What's the deal with lower serial numbers? Lower is better sq wise or one can think they'd be able to sell it for more $? Just wondering about the obsession over lower serial numbers.

MusicIsGreatSerial numbering don't mean anything to many. Some feel that a lower serial number is worth more than a higher one and is a justification to for them to re-sell it at a higher price. The price of a headphone is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay regardless of what the serial number is. Others want a specific serial number because they have a special attachment or meaning to them personally. Sound quality is all the the same throughout, I personally could careless about the serial numbers and care more on the sound and build quality of the cans.

Warubozuperfectly logical reasoning.... but Massdrop is all about exclusivity. That feeling that you've got something that nobody else has. And pursuing that line of thought, a nice low serial number increases the idea that you are a connoisseur, some kind of early adopter of the best and most exclusive.
"others copied YOU". Not the other way around. You bought it before it was fashionable!

thomas.browneDoesn't matter whether it's serial #10 or #666, the fact that one joined the drop already puts you into the that exclusive so called connoisseur group irregardless of what the serial number is. Massdrop's headphones collaborations are hardly a secret, everyone knows where to find them.

WarubozuIf everyone knows where to find them, then the only exclusivity comes from the low serial number.

thomas.browneLike I said, it's just a number. Big deal whether it's low or high, it looks the same and sounds the same. It isn't as if Massdrop and Fostex sprinkled some sort of specially mixed pixie dust over the fist 100 pairs to make them unique. They could make 10000 pairs with serial number to match they will be all the same from the first pair to the last unless they did some tuning mods to the latter pairs. It's just number, get over it.

WarubozuDude - I get it. I'm not a serial number junky. I'm just as happy with number 8472 as with number 1. It's the same product. But any cursory glance at the luxury industry shows you that being first get kudos. That's why a special colour scheme and a few additional trinkets allows Aston Martin, Porsche, or Cartier, to flog the same product for double the price: because there are less people whose product has those attributes.
There is a segment of the market that values early buy in, because by buying early, you are demarcating yourself as being able to discern good product "natively", not just because tons of other people are buying. You are demarcating yourself as an independent judge of quality, not a herd follower. Do you see how that can have some value for some people? Not for me... not for you... but for some people. Hence.... higher price.

MeruExactly! I and everyone who has joined the first Mahogany or this Purpleheart drop knows this won't be the last drop. Don't be surprised if they push 10000+ pairs of TH-X00. It will be so readily available as there will be many reselling their pairs that it will no longer be exclusive.

Merubut Meru... you're making my point. The product is not exclusive. For those who desire exclusivity, the only thing left is the serial number.

thomas.browneYes I see your point in that. Putting the "judge of quality" characteristic aside, it's all about paying for the bragging rights of a low number.

Warubozu....and again. The more TH-X00 drops there are, the more the low serial numbers are "exclusive".
Being top 100 out of 500 is nothing. Being the first guy to "discover" TH-X00 if 100,000 people wanna buy it, makes you look prophetic.
Look I don't have to argue this point this point, because there is ample evidence that silly early-numbered editions make more money across huge swathes of product marketing. It's a well established fact, whether we find it logical or not. And where there is demand, there is price increase, whether there is logic to it or not.

WarubozuExactly dude. If you don't care about bragging rights, then no problemo. Personally, like you I think, all I want is good product at a good price, that I can enjoy for its intrinsic quality. I'm not gonna be showing it out to get some kind of social mobility.

thomas.browneIsn't MD all about getting hobby stuffs at cheaper price? We thought it WAS exclusive before thus we got a pair of K7xx for the collection sake and look at what K7xx has become now. Exclusivity only makes sense if this pair of TH-X00 is priced at MSRP and only 100 pairs will be made, which likely will be just a dream. People need to wake up and get their lessons.

thomas.browneThat may be, only if the seller can get the higher asking price for his low number pair. More like first in line rather than discover.

WarubozuSerial number only makes sense in case of like AKG K3003 where sound quality and build quality differs as the batches go. Not on MD, seriously people need to get a grip.

thomas.browneCorrect! The sooner all these crazy serial number whoring buyers realize it's all about the enjoyment of listen to music from a quality pair of headphones for a good price, the less of disappointed they will be when they can't get the high prices they ask for a so called low serial number set of cans.

MeruIt is exclusive in the sense that we can only get it from Massdrop (second pair aside), not because it is limited edition stuff.

WarubozuSo wondering if I managed to get in under the 250 cutoff because I was curious and couldn't remember what the number was at when I did join, makes me crazy and a whore? Maybe just drop the Ad hominem attacks when discussing an aspect of something you dislike.

SkiboyWhy? Are you really that concerned about getting a low number? Would it kill you if you didn't get a low number? If not you have nothing to worry about, just be happy you managed to even get in on the drop.

WarubozuYeah Skiboy, you should be happy Massdrop and Foxtex will even TAKE your money on this exclusive, momentary, once-in-a-lifetime, 30 day drop. Shame on you for being fiscally responsible and caring about resale value! Shame on you for the audacity to think that serial numbers mean anything. I mean, imagine if the art or book industry took this approach. Everyone knows first editions are worthless! Worthless I SAY!! Almost as worthless as you for simply being curious about what number you were when you joined. Why don't you think on that guy!
