They are far from zero Soundstage for closed back design headphone. Zeos reviews headphone based on how much he likes a certain pair (he's very opinionated), rather than how well a pair of headphones does it's intended job. He shits all over ATH-M50s everytime, even though they are one the more robustly constructed plastic pair of headphones & have good enough sound signature to be considered studio monitors, as they claim, AT never claimed M50s have a flat sound signature, which means yes they are colored to a degree. Then he reviews Shure Srh840 & claims they are perfect for studio monitor use, & yet says almost nothing about flimsy build quality & the fact that they break with in a year with moderate use. So you gotta take Zeos with a grain of salt, like every other reviewer, and be your own judge - try to get your hands on a pair & test 'em yourself, instead of claiming something someone else has claimed.

DropThisI agree that everyone should take his reviews with a grain of salt, though I personally dislike the M50's as well on a personal level. In this day and age of options and much more reasonable price points, those headphones are very lackluster.

amoeba1126With a good consumer grade sound (not audiophile), detachable cabling, 3 different cables, & a carrying case - all for less than $120 on Amazon quite regularly, I'm not sure what options with a more reasonable price you are talking about. Care to mention some?

DropThisTo first clarify, detachable cables, cases, extra cables, ect... those don't mean much to me. The only thing that matters for headphones at ANY price point is sound. Everything else is simply icing to various icing degrees depending on personal preferences. Well... that and build quality. No one likes broken headphones of course.
On that note, there are quite a few comparable headphones that can often be found at comparable prices (under $150) that IMO are audibly better compared to the M50X.
- AKG K553 - AKG K545 (colored version of K553) - Beyer DT770 - Sennheiser HD 380 Pro
There are also a few closed headphones that are cheaper with IMO comparable sound. If we are talking about open headphones, it becomes an entirely different ballgame.
Point is, the M50x are NOT best value when it comes to sound and there are other options other than the ones I just listed off the top of my head. For me personally at least, they don't sound very good. They might come with a bigger accessory package, but if a buyer is looking at those things and compensating it for sound, they are doing it completely wrong IMO.

amoeba1126Detachable cables mean a lot to other people though. It's not a deal breaker to me, but I would love to see that in every headphone. The more modular the design, the easier it would be for an average user to service their own set of headphones - just replace the cable, instead of taking the whole headphone apart. I have AKG 553 & HD 380 Pro's nether one is an overall sound improvement over M50x's, they're better at something & worse at something else - all a matter of preference over what kinda sound you like.

DropThisIn a heads up comparison, detachable cables should never be a deal breaker for anyone. There are only 2 situations where detachable cables have any real meaning; you want to take it off when you put it up or you want to use a different cable. Assuming the cable is properly built defective, there really isn't any reason one upgrades the cable, especially for any sort of entry level headphones. That said, it IS a nice feature to have, though that's all it amounts to.
Sound signatures are subjective, but the K553 and HD380 Pro (at least IMO) are clearly a level above the M50X for every except for bass quantity. If you don't like the neutral tone, the DT770 and K545 offer more colored sound. The M50X are not bad headphones by any means, but they have been overhyped by a lot of people and not nearly as good as a lot of people believe them to be.

amoeba1126They are overhyped, but I love my bass, the fact that I don't need to increase bass with M50x's is what made me purchase them initially, now I just keep 'em for comparison reasons. But those other headphones you mentioned are not an improvement IMO, not better priced, and not better value.
