Bit disappointed by the build quality of my Purple Hearts. Don't get me wrong, these things sound remarkable - truly - but I think I got a bit unlucky with the manufacturing. I got the twisted cable, scratch marks in the varnish of the wooden ear up and a pretty poor finish on the wood. That is, none of the richness in colour and grain as per the photos, no grain really shows throw at all. The finish just looks matt dark purple. Shame, cos the sound really is the best I have ever heard at this price point.

weehdoggiebest you've heard in the price range? 400i destroys them. hd600 eats them alive. same for hd650
but they are fully open, not a fair comparison ;-)

Uzuzu"400i destroys them."
As an owner of the 400i, I disagree with this. I'm much happier with my Purplehearts than any other ~$500 headphone I've tried so far.

UzuzuI'm going to have to disagree about the 400i's as well. My friend and I didn't back to back comparisons between the two and while the 400's are epic for vocals and acoustic stuff, they have a lower treble peak that combined with the bass roll-off makes them really unpleasant for rock/pop.

PieceOfTauthe 400i don't have a bass roll-off. their low end is nearly perfect and ideal in response. most people though are bass addicts and crave that heavy low end. 400i's bass extends very deep just less impact than say the hd650 (which actually rolls off hard at 30hz) or the fostex cans. also depends on what you drive the 400i out of. Myself right now is grace m9xx>Lyr 2 w/ Blackburn Mullard tubes circa 1969>400i/hd650 I run my fostex cans and iems straight out of the m9xx. Couldn't be happier. I wasn't impressed by the x00's and after hearing everything inbetween and owning the emu teaks as well I only vouch for the th-900s or the 600s if you really like bass but can't afford as much for the 900s. But the 400i is bliss. Amazing detail but not overly so. I can still enjoy my mp3s out of them (stone me to death for it ;-)) I didn't really think the treble on it was hot at all even through my m9xx, but through the lyr 2 with the warm mullard tubes it is unreal, dude.

UzuzuEven I want to crap on the SQ of the PH very furiously, the 400i doesn't stand a chance at all, objectively and subjectively speaking. HD600/650 wise, well, many open-back can kill the PH at its price/performance level. The same thing applies to the Sony Z7 and the upcoming magnum opus Z1R. The advantage of an open-backed design is simply overwhelming other than bass and isolation aspects.

Meru? Objectively the 400i beats the PH. Reaches further into detail. Better extension. Better midrange. Flatter response. Subjectively varies person to person. The bass of these fostex cans is fatiguing, to me.

UzuzuThat's just not true. 400i has a flatter response, everything else you noted is subjective. It does not reach further into detail in my experience. Midrange is more forward on the 400i. PH sounds way way more euphoric and and enjoyable to my ears (that's subbjectivity). 400i sounds thin to me, no meat on the bones and is not as flat as say, the HD600. I'd take HD600 all day over the 400i if I was looking for a neutral can.

zbellsObjective is a flat response. Subjective is what response you prefer. SMH.
