Dear community, I'm following Massdrop for some months now and was interested in fostex Massdrop headphones but was afraid of ordering one without hearing them ... then I had the opportunity to try and buy a second hand 610 not far from my house, I was blown away the first time I listen to them, and was too excited that I could get them immediately so I bought them ... but with time I realized the mids and high mids are fatiguing and a bit harsh to my ears, and I have to reduce the volume a bit quit often and then miss the bass ... their serial number is 26 ! btw. so after reading a lot of reviews and comments I feel I still like the fostex style of sound and confort but maybe would enjoy a variation, So which one of the Fostex Massdrop family do you think I could enjoy more ? will it be different enough to the 610 ? Maybe I just realized that I was a bit of a bass head after all ... so that's why my feeling goes toward the purple heart... make a bold move ... would this one have two much bass ? its always difficult to process the extreme words people are using to describe their experience , they might say much more bass when in reality is is a little compare to a wider range of headphone ... Is the mahogany different enough to the 610 for mid smoothness and extra bass ? and last question ? lets say I join the next purple heart drop but then think there is a little too much bass, fitting the mahogany cups on them would bring me the original thX00 sound ?
(listening at Bat for lashes right now, I would really like smoother mids and highs ...)
thanks for your help PS : my 610 are driven by a combo Micromega Mydac-Myamp.

superflarGive the Purpleheart a go and change the pads to angled sheepskin (Brainwaives or ZMF). The result will be a slightly wider soundstage with the bass and treble toned down a bit due to the lack of the extra plastic disc that is in the stock pads (Not the mounting disc, there is another disc in the stock pads), the comfort should also increase for longer listening sessions. I'm still waiting on my PH to arrive from the recent drop but that is the best advice I can give you based on the research I have done. The mahogany may be fine for you as well, it all depends on your personal preference. Good luck :)

JonoEfthyThanks JonoEfthy, please give us your impressions when you receive them :-) BTW, the PH's drop just finished some days ago, when do you think a new drop could come back ?

superflarYeah, bummer, you just missed the drop. I also ordered the Purplehearts, seems like these will fit you most as well from what you described.
Next drop will possibly be in a few months again.

superflarNo one other than Massdrop and Fostex knows exactly when the next drop will be, but judging from the past drops i'd estimate late Jan to early Feb. Keep an eye on HifiShark for used sales, it's quite useful if your looking for a used set. There isn't too many PH's on there or even Ebony's, but due to the recent 2 drops over the holiday season there might be a few going up for resale over the next month or so. Good luck mate :)
