Are these better than Sennheiser HD595? How about compared to the Vmoda crossfade M-100?

dpereiraAs the TH-X00 are mid-fi headphones, and the ones you mention above are lo-fi headphones, I would expect the X00s to be better.
It's hard for me to recommend the X00s when the much better TH-900s (hi-fi) are available for $1,000 - $1,200.

GUTBThanks, GUTB. The TH-900 is wayy over my budget, haha. I also heard it is even more "V-shaped" than this TH-X00 mahogany, and with more recessed mids, which I might not prefer.

GUTBThe TH-900 is also squarely in the mid-fi bracket. Fostex doesn't make hifi gear.

DubharmonicNope, sorry, it's hi-fi. I speak as someone who owns 3 sets of hi-fi headphones.

GUTBThe TH-900 has too many weaknesses to be considered hifi. I can understand that you'd want to think otherwise after making the purchase.

DubharmonicThe TH-900 competes with the HD800, but is a little bit less resolving and soundstage is a little smaller, but is also more musical. In fact, the TH-900 is so good, it is only a step below my Focal Utopias, and even beats the Utopia in terms of imaging capability. The sucked out mids is the only downside, but that also gives it its perception of high dyanmics and puts microdetails to the forefront.
The TH-900 is a hi-fi product. I'm sorry. I know there is this misguided meme amongst the Reddit crowd to pretend that the TH-X00 is just a slightly stepped down TH-900 so you guys can pretend to be into hi-fi at $400....but it just isn't the case.

GUTBIt's very odd that you would compare the fun, closed back TH-900 and the wide open, analytical HD800. They're so different.
The TH-X00 isn't just a slightly stepped down TH-900. They're both heavily colored mid-fi options tuned for a specific taste. This isn't debatable as it's been proven in measurements. Don't make the common mistake of confusing accuracy with enjoyment.

GUTBThe TH-X00 is a product (or byproduct) from the main Fostex line, tuned with a proper signature, it is not a 900, nor a 600. And yes you can get hi-fi at %400 and less, I learned that the hard way. The HD-600, and 650 (even the 580) (which I do not like, BTW) are considered hi-fi, and they indeed sound like hi-fi, and they are below the $400 mark (My last 580 was purchased for $150.00). For portable use I have heard muti-thousand IEM's that sound no better than a Portapro at $50.00 (the one I used for portable use mainly, and having a couple more IEM, that cost many times as much) OTOH, the Qualia from Sony, that cost thousands at that time, and was considered hi-fi, was to my ears nothing more like a mid-fi in a cave...Same as hi-end AKG's, Audio Technica's, the glorious JVC, and many others considered hi-fi because of the price. The MDR-R10 was my favorite headphone, and still probably is, unfortunately always out of my reach, for one reason or the other. The Denon's we considered by many audiophiles as the fair replacement for the R-10 soundwise, and the Denon's were made by Fostex, so resuming, yes you can get hi-fi cheap, if you choose wisely, and considering your preference.
Sound as many things in life is a matter of preference. How a recording is supposed to sound like, nobody knows. All recordings has colorations imposed by the humans behind the consoles, and the transductores used for the recording, and acoustics of the venue or studio, so it all comes to, I like this one, better than that.

albertofgomezThe only people who think the HD600/650/etc are hi-fi are poor have-nothing students on Reddit and on here. They are technically mid-fi products, although in reality they are un-euphonic junk. Below those models are basically lo-fi.
The TH-X00 is basically a TH-600 with, yes, a little different tuning, cosmetic cups and a cheaper price for Massdrop.
The TH-900, however, isn't just a TH-600 with different tuning. All three headphones share the bio-cellulose driver, but the TH-900 has a much more powerful magnet array, premium acoustic wood resin cups, ultra pure OFC cables, etc.
In terms of resolving power, the TH-900 is very strong competes with the HD800 -- which makes it one of the most resolving headphones period. In terms of soundstage, it has among the widest and most accurate imaging of any closed-back. Of course, the TH-900 is still entry-level in terms of hi-fi, but in the entry level field it is highly competitive.

GUTBI have been involved in audio for over 20 years, so I'm not a newbie, I'm not poor, I have quite bit of cash involved in headphones, and audio in general, a couple of custom made headphone amps, so I'm not justifying my investment, no need for that, I do believe what I hear. I have had the pleasure of listening in headphones from the Orpheus, Stax, down a big deal, and I have been in quite several head-fi meeting, (as a vendor and as a member, both).
You are wrong on that. Being a new headphone with more bell and whistles, does not make a headphone better, and to what extend you will hear the difference from 1 tesla to a 1.5 tesla, is debatable by a long shot, otherwise all manufacturers will use 1.5 tesla and bigger.... Cables, I will even go there, as I do not believe in cables, to me this is an scam to sell beauty to silly people, but both are OFC, indeed, there is no copper in audio nowadays that is not OF. Both uses wood cups, so no sure what the difference will be, as you may prefer one tone to the other.... About the grandpas in the headphone world, the HP-1000 from Grado is what, how many years old? And still hold a candle in many aspects, while we speak of headphones, (I do not like it either OK?) The MDR-R10 is probably the best dynamic headphone I have ever heard, and is from the 80's....Sony had failed miserably in getting that glorious sound back. The HD650 and 600, and even 580, are hi-fi, by a big shot, Ultrasone editions are hi-fi, hi Beyers are hi-fi, and has nothing to do with price.... Now I agree that you may find better out there, or at least ones that you may like better.
WTB what is Reddit????

albertofgomezIt's just not believable that you would find those headphones hi-fi. I owned an HD600 and was able to compare it directly against the TH-900 -- they aren't on the same planet.

GUTBI do not like the Sennheiser sound either....nor Grados, one is too laid back for my taste, but that happens mainly with all open back headphones, and some people may like open versus close, the Grado's have a very colorful and "grateful" sound, that varies from one to another with the exception of the HP-1 and 2 from grandpa Grado, that are bored to make you sleep.... I own the Rudistor's Chroma MD-1 and MD-2 both, 60 mm drivers, and the open back is not my cup of tea, but the sound is beautiful, open, detailed, spacious, far better than the Senns by long....
I was active part of head-fi when the 650 hit the market, and there was a lot of argument about that, I was one of the main detractors, and still am but not liking one thing does not make it bad...Senns to me is just the Orpheus, period...but they are detailed, balanced, and euphonic for some kind of music, classical among them...I'm a rocker, so for me they are banned...LOL...
