To the community of folks here who have in-depth knowledge of high end audiophile equipment. A friend of mine has suggested I get the Sennheiser HD 800 S Headphones (I've heard them with a Pono Player and OMG - out of this world sound). They are open-backed vs. closed like the TH-X00. BUT they are $800 or more used for a quality pair on eBay. That's a crazy investment for me. But that sound!!! Wow! Was thinking of pairing this with the Opus #1 audio player that's running here on Massdrop

climbthemtnsThey'll sound incredibly different, so getting both is an option you should consider

climbthemtnsThe HD800S sound great because Sennheiser finally pulled their heads out of their butts regarding how the HD800 should have sounded to begin with. ;)

amoeba1126What? Allot of people prefer the original hd800 including myself over the s, the original has better detail retrieval and better bass imo.

Petronas44The treble for the HD800 was unbearable for many and the HD800S did a good job of improving on that. The HD800 was unlistenable for me unless I paired them up with a nice warm tube amp.

amoeba1126Yea seems to be the case with most people that prefer the s, I heard it recently and only for a short time but I've owned the non s for a few months now and it just fits me perfectly I don't even plan to mod it I like it just the way it is. To each there own, for me I started off with a preference towards warmth, I liked tube amps and warm headphones like the hd650, but all my original equipment is gone and I now consider my favorite amp the jotenheim and favorite headphones the hd800 that being said a pair of balanced hd650's still sound amazing out of the jotemheim but my preferences have definitely swung the other way and I've been getting into speakers now and notice I'm looking for the same type of sound as the hd800 lol

amoeba1126My point to that by the way was that if I had heard the hd800 & hd800s when I preferred a warm sound I probably would have saved up even more money and got an s

Petronas44Personally, I still wouldn't want the HD800 or HD800S as it's not my cup of tea, but if I had to choose between the two, I would definitely go with the S. I am more of a basshead myself.

amoeba1126I can definitely appreciate that I love some good bass cans to, I really love my Sony mdrz7 it might actually see more use than any other I've owned. What good bass cans have you heard and liked

Petronas44For great bass quality in general, I am very fond of the Audeze LCD-2 pre-Fazr. For sheer impact, the Sony XB700 was really fun. There was also the Ultrasone 900 Pro, but the treble on those make my ears bleed. Philips Fidelio X2 probably deserves some mention here too. For IEM's, I really liked both the UE700 or PFE 232.
