So going back to the TH-X00. I've spent the day with my D5K and my new m9XX and all I can think is that it's true. The D5K are a bit heavy on bass, and while very enjoyable, the treble is a tad up high. It really does sound like the TH-X00 was designed to be a sort of more neutral form of the D5K. What I'm trying to decide right now is actually whether I should get the HE400i as I have never tried or owned a MP type headphone... or these. I'll end up with both for sure in the future. But one will have to come after the other. Decisions decisions. Or should I get these and save up and get the HE560 instead?

DeathbyMusicI was in the same boat trying to decide if I should get this or 400i, and I decided to get both (no more headphone shopping for me for a long time). The deal on the 400i is very good, a bit of research has me thinking they are very, very good sounding headphones, especially for $300. And its obvious why the TH-X00 are so appealing... too many attractive headphone deals this year. Regarding the HE560, I've read it's only marginally better than the 400i and, for the duration of the sale, you're looking at $300 vs $700 - the 560's usually costs only $200 more. Edit: HE-560 costs $400 more new than 400i oops

AdamJAnd here I made the same conclusion as you! I am getting both as well, but I actually decided on the HE560 instead. I've seen both opinions regarding HE560 VS HE400i. I'm not getting both at the same time though. Probably one or the other for now. Now I have to reconsider if the HE560 is worth the extra. Damn.

DeathbyMusicHi - I own the HE560 and they are fantastic. At the current sale price (650?) it is, to me, a no brainer if you are in that market. I bought around 720 last year. The soundstage, precision are really great. I do agree that the "perfomance gap" between the HE400i and HE560 is really slim and it is up to you to decide if it's worth your money to bridge that gap.
That being said, the HE560 is an awesome everyday headphone and you will not regret buying them.
On topic... I was lurking the TH-900 to get a closed-back headphone for the collection but the TH-X00 is piquing my curiosity... The Canadian exchange rate is killing this somewhat tho.

MD10Also, not a lot of people mention it by the HE560's EQ amazingly well (much Bass) and will scale incredibly well while still sounding great right out on my iPad.

MD10I appreciate your feedback on these headphones. I've decided on the HE-400i because I already own some high-end cans like HD 700 and HD 800, so just wanted to experience a good-quality planar - and the sale price is very nice. If I were lacking a higher-end phone, I would likely pay-up for the HE-560 as well.

DeathbyMusicIf I were you, I would see if I could find a pair of HE500s. I have both and I actually like the 500s more than the 560s but they're both fantastic cans. FWIW, I listen to mainly electronic music with female vocals and some rock as well.

pordssam89I have them both also and the HE560 is much lighter, much more comfortable and EQ's much better. Once I plugged the HE560 into my Lyr 2 and EQ'd them it was game over. I never listen to the HE500 anymore.

pordssam89I second this. I bought both at the same time. I really wanted to like the 560, but the 500 is just sooo much fuller sounding. Maybe if i hadn't of heard the two together I'd feel different. Maybe my Uberfrost/Lyr 2 stack just blends better with the 500. To each their own, though.

b14cx0utI also have the HE500 and I think it EQs pretty well to my ears (it has pretty low distortion figures which usually mean it EQs well). The only downside at the price they are going at is the weight (they are pretty heavy - some people will be okay with this, and some people will just NOT).
There are also a number of well documented mods to help get a more ideal frequency response. Couple of suggestions - change pads to the Focus or Focus-A pads (available directly from the Hifiman shop) and do a search for "grill mod" (a simple trick to determine whether you will like the grill mod is to listen to the headphone withand without the grill and see if you prefer the sound without the grill. If you like the sound without the grill then you can look to find different, or more transparent sounding grill material to replace stock grill). These two simple changes make the HE500 sound even better for very little money. If you want to try something more ambitious, try to follow instruments to make a DIY "Jergpad" mod. This sounds even better than the Focus pads.
The HE560 is supposedly technically better and MUCH more comfortable. It also has a quite different sound signature.
If you try both and you find the HE560 to be the same or even very marginally worse, I would go the 560 purely for the comfort factor if you can afford it.
Word of warning in that neither the 500 or 560 will get to its best potential unless you have a decent amp (doesn't have to be super amazingly expensive, but neither your phone nor the laptop is likely to do it justice). In the case of the 500, some people recommend amps with huge current swing (like Crown speaker amps) to get the best possible bass quality from it.
Having said that I have tried running my HE500 off a Geek Out 700 and it gets plenty loud and sounds pretty good (to me) so I don't think it is the most difficult of headphones to drive (you just need a decent amp) - the Grace Designs massdrop special should do perfectly fine!

orlanderlvI agree that the HE-560 is, ergonomically, a huge improvement over the HE-500. They definitely don't put a lot of pressure on the top of your head like the 500s do. IMO, the 560 is more analytical with a more neutral frequency response which does EQ better but to my ears the 500s have a more punchy and tighter bass with more energy and impact in the midrange.
Perhaps using a tube amp is a better option with the 560 as I did like the sound a bit more (but still not as much as the 500) when paired with my EF5 but since I use the Mjolnir ver.1 most of the time, I prefer swapping between the HE-500 and the LCD 2.2.
Depends on what you use the cans for and the type of music you listen to as well.
