ColdCoffeeno amp needed. but it will help a bit. and yes it is an upgrade from an M50s.

ColdCoffee1. An amp with low output impedance would be highly recommended (tube amps probably wouldn't be a good match although I'm sure you could find one).
2. If you like bass, I'm sure you'll find these a pretty big upgrade to your m50s.

2.While i like tight bass, I value more clarity or definition. Are these going to have an emphasised low range with muddled highs?

ColdCoffee1. You'll be 'fine'. The headphones won't be optimal without an amp and you'll be missing out on some of the details and finer aspects of the headphones but they should be fine without one.
2. These cans will sound surprisingly open for a closed headphone. The soundstage is large and the imaging is accurate. The highs are fantastic. Some reviews are even saying that it's better than it's older brother, the TH-900 (but take that with a grain of salt). The mids are "lush and creamy" and vocals are definitely not muddled. It's touted as a 'fun' or 'musical' headphone and should work with just about any genre of music.

ColdCoffeeThe O2/ODAC is a good amp/dac combo to start off. JDSLabs has them as well as some other sites I believe.
The Schiit Fulla also seems like a good product but I've never had any personal experience with it. However, I do have some other products from Schiit and it's always been top-notch.

pordssam89People are blurring together desktop dac/amps that require A/C power and portable ones that run off of USB power... IMO, since lotsa folks will use a laptop as their music source, people should pause and get clear about whether desktop units fit their usage patterns... and if they do, are they really worth their typically much higher cost...
I have a Fulla and I like it perfectly fine for lots of cans... but it's kinda wimpy for my HE-500's though... the CEntrance Slim has more oomph and thus does much better with those... meanwhile, the desktop CEntrance DACmini CX drives them great without even breathing hard... but it cost a whole lot more too... in terms of bang-for-the-buck, I think the CEntrace Slim is hard to beat...

RShackDo you get any noticeable line noise from the USB power on that CEntrance? I recently replaced my Xonar U7 with a Schiit Magni 2U/Modi 2U stack since my main use is for my desktop...and while the U7 is serviceable on my work laptop, I have problems with it (or OSX) deciding to suddenly shut off and have audio go back to the laptop speakers...(which kinda sucks in the office if I happen to be on a playlist that has Steel Panther on it....)

2. I like my ath m50s, and I am not too aware of audiophile lingo, but from what you guys have read in the reviews, will this have a similar sound signature? In short, will this be something different, or be an upgrade overall, or just better of the same?
