Any idea how this stacks up to a Senn HD 700 for $420?

rdrdrScrew the X00s, I'd buy the Senns for that price. This will definitely drop again in the future, and once these go for resale you'll find them worth like 300 not to long from now. Go for the Senns.

rdrdrYeah, I'd pick up the HD700 for $420. It's not that the Fostex are not worth it (in my opinion, the D5K are worth every penny I paid) but the HD700 are hard to get for $420. Plus, I'm a long time Sennheiser fan.

DeathbyMusicI've been pining for the D5000's since they were announced, and briefly considered settling for the D2000s (ended up getting IEMs instead). Seeing those wooden earcups on massdrop today just hit a nerve.
I love my Sennheiser HD 580s, and I actually prefer their sound sig to the 700.
On the other hand, the HD 700 is by far the most technically impressive headphone I've ever used. I'm curious if the X00 can offer a comprable level of detail and soundstage with a more pleasing (for my taste) sound sig?

rdrdrI've never even seen the HD700 in real life, so I can't offer any comparison. But I am extremely happy with my D5K. I bought mine right before they were replaced by the newer Denon headphones. So I bought them at their lowest price, and they are now worth at least what they were when new. You can't do much worse. I didn't even get the more breathtakingly beautiful D7K but I still love them. I could sell them and get my money back (that would of course be unethical) but I can't bring myself to do it.
Honestly, I don't know the full potential of the D5K cause mine are about 15 hours old. Yup. 4 years of ownership, and they only have 15 hours on them. It's criminal. But I consider them to be superior to the Q701 in most areas. In fact, to me, they're on another level. I think that you'd be happy with either. But the D5K are definitely a fun sounding pair of headphones. I don't know if the HD700 are more reference or what, but I don't think you could go wrong with either one.
I've been a long time Sennheiser fan, and my first full sized Senn cans were the HD595. I liked them very much. There is a certain smoothness to Senn's sig that I like. But the thing I like about the Fostex/Denon is that they sound less flat and that's a good thing cause my AKG sounds flat enough for my tastes.

rdrdr@rdrdr You make an excellent point. The hd700 IMO are excellent headphones. When I first got them I heard the 6/7k peak. I started listening to flac from an ibasso dx90. Very tinny and not full bodied presentation from portable. I tried burning them in for 8 hours a day or so and they seemed to soften up after a week. However it wasnt until I got the gustard h10 that I fell in love with hd700. I won't argue that the hd700 are perfect headphones, but with proper amplification and the slightest eq, they are thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. Best $500 I've spent on audio so far... followed by grace m9xx. I'm in on the fostex x00 and I expect a much more impact full and warm listen from them vs the hd700, but I do not expect the accuracy, transparency, detail and speed of the hd700.
