What would be a good portable Dac/Amp to use with my HD6xx and Sony Xperia 1 V cell phone?
I am new to this hobby. I purchased a HD6XX and plan to use it with my Sony Xperia 1 V cell phone, that has a 3.5mm jack. I was wondering if I needed a portable dac/amp or just a portable amp and if so what would one recommend? Any assistance one could provide, would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Haz

I posted this link for those interested in tonewoods comparisons in headphones. Website head-fi, forum Thread "The Great Grado Experiment (4 tonewoods tested, more to come !)".
Although pro-reviewers have also done this with 1 model headphone changing wood species types, I selected this forum review from head-fi, as this experiment had no marketing connection.
Post #1 presents the premise for walnut, cherry, maple and birch & testing prerequisites. The same drivers were placed into each wood type cup per each of 5 reviewers. The cups were all cut identically for all woods. Noted these are much different cup types than our Fostex here, but the comparison holds for differences in woods, comparing apples to apples in their study.
It is an amiable summary of 5 people hearing the exact same wood cups mailed around to each each for placing their one set drivers per owner in, taking their turn waiting for mailed cups from each other. Each reviewer used his same drivers in & out of each type of wood to accurately compare in listening. To save all reading time, here is the link above to clic on, but the direct summaries of how each wood differs in sonic properties and results are- (scroll to page bottoms listed below gets you thru to each review) :
Page #1, has 2 reviews, post #2 by AHorse, and also post # 4 by kv. Page #7 post #91 by wje. Page #9 post #135 (updated review) by kv (again). Page #11 post #165 by Teke Page #13 post #190 by Joe. Joe also adds in same post #190, audio results adding more tonewoods - ebony, oak and padauk, from a previous study he did, different from this experiment.
The Pro-reviews go further with extensive laboratory testing including very many charts, graphs, computer-analysis, etc, for various particular model wood headphones that offered different wood cup options that were used in their analysis. Those are found online also.
Noted in the linked head-fi study, these participant reviewers have heard very many headphones, have done numerous modifications, and have very much experience in all things headphone-wise. They are used to fine listening for detail. They enjoyed their experiment & it is interesting to read. Summarized the pages above to get right to their final reviews.
As I wrote much earlier back a few pages, up to now, my favorite woods in headphones sonically are - walnut, cherry, sapele and padauk, with our awaiting mahogany (probably philippine mahogany type; African Mahogany/Khaya is wishful thinking) a welcome addition. Rosewood was OK for me, some other woods I did not care for sonically.
Topic Change - My phones with the gorgeous acoustically perfect wood cups will arrive Saturday......YEAH!! I hope we get some first buyer impressions here soon.
