I have been so psyched about this headphone, got in the drop realtively early and then realized today... Not shipping until May. SAD FACE!
That means I won't have the headphone itch scratched until summer. Any suggestions on how to avoid buying more things (as I ask you for suggestions on something I should buy... lol)?
My catalog is already a bit full but I feel I need something fun and new and possibly closed design.
Klipsch X10i, Klipsch R6i, Klipsch X4i, Klipsch S4i, Klipsch Mode 40, Klipsch Status, Klipsch Image ONE, Klipsch Image ONE Bluetooth, MEE audio Sport-Fi M6, MEE audio M6 PRO, MEE audio Air-Fi AF32, Photive BTH3, AKG K 240 MKII, Sony MDR7520, Shure SE 215, RHA MA750i, Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro, Jaybird X2, Etymotic Research ER4, Zagg ZR-LE, Sennheiser PX100, Sennheiser HD280, Sennheiser HD600, Philips Fidelio X2, Koss PortaPro, Grado SR80i, Grado SR125e, Audio-Technica ATH-M40x, Audio-Technica ATH-M50, Bowers & Wilkins P5, V-Moda Crossfade LP2, Bose QC15 and now the Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 headphones... in May/June.
The Fostex would have kept my addiction fed for quite a while but now I can't help but lust over something else until I have it in my hands. Suggestions?

lvince95Oh I'm well aware haha. I used to review headphones on my personal blog so I bought what the masses bought. But there area few nice guys in there :-P (also still had to pay my San Francisco rent and college loans haha).

justex07Why don't you sell all those, stop side-grading, and go straight to end-game/summit-fi?

lvince95I doubt I'd actually get much for them. Plus I still like to reference headphones vs each other. What headphone would you consider "summit-fi?" Perhaps that's what I set my eye on going forward instead of the $150-400 range.

justex07No point spending $1.1k (Beyerdynamic T1), $1.7k (Sennheiser HD800S), $3k (Hifiman HE-1000) or $4k (Audeze LCD-4) if you're running them out of a $300 amp. That's the main thing holding me back, can't justify the expense right now. Personally, I have my eye on the Hifiman Edition X for this year.
Also, a more important question, lots of headphones, but what are your sources?

justex07Yow, quite a collection. I recently picked up a HE-400i for a good price and have been enjoying the heck out of them. I'd also consider the DT1770 if the price came down a bit. I listened to one at a local meet-up last weekend, it's reminiscent of my DT770 but cleaned up significantly with tighter bass.

justex07I had the same itch, I bought Ultrasone Edition M. It's extremely stylish, great sounding, very portable.

SocrateaseI love the idea of trying something new like electrostatic/magneplanar headphones. My only issue is the cost of the headphones, the apparent high power requirements and to a lesser degree the fact that I don't have any nice closed headphones (Audio-Technica and V-Modas are nice but nothing super awesome). The HE-400i does look like a beautiful and cost-effective start to something totally different for me though...

justex07Well, what about the actual files/songs itself? Where do you get your music, and at what quality?
Seems like you do a lot of listening from your laptop? You'd be better off starting with something like the Chord Mojo for the laptop, works well with mobile devices as well, and would definitely power this well. For serious home listening (for any higher-end headphones you may get in future), I'm fond of the higher-end stuff from Schiit Audio (Lyr 2 and above for amps, for example).
I used to be all about trying different cans, etc in the beginning, but now focus on just a few flagship/near-flagships instead. Totalling up the cost of all the $300 or so priced cans, you could get some really superb gear, just find out what sound signature fits your specific tastes, and get the best headphone you can afford that matches it.

echinekoThe vast majority of my music listening comes from my MacBook Pro Retina (using one of the above USB DACs to do output) followed by my iPhone (the FiiO K1 works on the lightning out using the Apple Camera Connection Kit!).
On my computer it's pulling 320kbps AAC or FLAC files from a Drobo, on the go it's 256 AAC or Tidal (Flac 1411kbps). From my bedroom and living room systems it's either vinyl (project carbon or audio-technica) or streaming 256 AAC.
I don't see myself selling anything but I would be up for something really fantastic if I could justify it. I think it is about time I get a new desktop DAC/Amp though. I really do love the FiiO K1 and E10K V2 but if I am going to try something like electrostatic/magneplanar, more power will be required. My Sonic Adventure Reality is starting to show wear too. Need to upgrade the tubes and lubricate the pot. But in the end it's picking up a lot of EMI in my office which is super annoying and is prone to humming in quiet parts of songs.
I guess at this point I need to decide what DAC/Amp + Headphone combo would be ideal and save up. I'm still in for this Fostex though haha. I need to get cheaper hobbies/obsessions; wine, hifi and photography are too damn expensive!

justex07Most of the source files you mentioned are still compressed. You'd get a better value for your gear with uncompressed music, even plain CDs are an improvement. I have Tidal Hifi myself, and it's pretty decent while on the go or streaming in the car. And as I said, try the Mojo, it's pretty darn awesome with a laptop/mobile device, and way better than any portable DAC you currently have.
As for the home setup, I'd say spend some time auditioning, at a meet if no stores are nearby. No reviews will help you decide what you prefer. Listen for yourself and decide. I'm fond of Hifiman, Audeze, ZMF and Beyerdynamic, all of which I got to try extensively before purchasing.

justex07The HE-400i is very easy to drive. It's a different sound signature than most dynamic phones, though. Takes a bit of getting used to.

justex07Also, when I think of it, if you want something fun to try while waiting for these (though I strongly advise thinning the herd and upgrading), the HE-400S is a great fit, works great even out of my iPhone + Tidal, you don't need anything else. It is open though

justex07dude the 400is sound amazing, easy to drive and are better than any of the headphones in the list of cans you say you own. Holy crap just get them. The x00's arent as good, cost more and aren't truly closed and definitely don't sound closed anyways so you should feel fine about it.

UzuzuThe HE-400i ($499) is pretty awesome, but to say they aren't as good (nope), cost more (definitely nope) and aren't truly closed (vs the totally closed 400i, right? NOPE) is disingenuous. There's lots of good points to it, no need to make stuff up. Regardless, the TH-X00 is a special headphone, and totally deserves a place in anyone's collection, especially at this price.

justex07Heh, I have a Total BitHead in my office. My Fiio E12 makes it sound like it's broken, amazing how fast technology has improved. Looking forward to replacing it with the m9xx when it arrives next week.

Socrateaseyeah, I was just thinking about this earlier today. It's insane how fast DAC technology has progressed in the last 10 years. Amps have progressed, especially solid state amps, but nothing like the explosion we've seen in DAC quality, cost and size. Today a DAC that can fit in your hand for $200 or so can compete with if not whip desktop units costing $1000+ from 10 years ago.
