Just got my pair in and I have to say I am kinda disappointed on multiple fronts. First off both the inner and outer box were crushed during shipping. Always a good initial impression. As soon as I pulled out the headphones the first thing I noticed was a large 3/4" long and 1/16" thick black streak on the right cup that looks like someone marked it with a colored pencil. On the other side of that same cup is a 1/4" white scratch under the clearcoat. To top it off the grain pattern looks worse than I have seen in anyone's pictures and there are several fine scratches on the outside of the clearcoat. Fortunately the left cup looks beautiful like I have seen in pictures so I guess I will just keep them facing towards me from that side so it doesn't bother me as much. Honestly, the headphones are straight up ugly if you look at the right cup.
I am new in the audiophile world and am coming from an m50x I've had for about a year. Immediately the mids and highs stand out as being on a whole other level with the TH-X00 compared to m50x. Soundstage, detail, and separation is much better. I have to admit though I am a bit disappointed by the bass. The TH-X00 doesn't seem much if at all better, which is very different from impressions I have seen online. Honestly it almost seems like less bass. Playing heavy sub bass genres like dubstep or rap you can hardly hear any sub bass at all without heavy EQing. Is it possible the headphones were damaged in transit? The box sure did take a heavy beating.
Overall I am pretty iffy on this purchase and sad that my headphones are not only less beautiful than others I have seen but actually quite ugly with all the blemishes on the one side.

TwoTimeWhat are you using the drive them? Give them time. The m50x are very bass heavy, it can take time to adjust to more detailed bass especially sub bass higher end cans offer. I felt the same when I moved from my Sennheiser CX-300s to my Klipsch IEMs. Once you adjust it's hard to go back to the 'boomy' bass.

craingerUsing a Soundblaster E5 to drive them. I know it's not the very best but it made my m50's sound much better compared to an old asus xonar dg sound card I used to use with them. Also don't get me wrong, the TH-X00 gets very bassy with adjusting EQ but I was kind of expecting to be blown away by bass right out of the box based on other peoples impressions. The mid's and highs are fantastic compared to what I am used to and worth it themselves. I am mostly bummed by the cosmetically challenged cup but I can't see it when it's on my head anyway right? :) Might suck for resale value down the road though. I have purplehearts on the way also, and I will almost definitely be selling my least preferred of the two.

TwoTimeYou should see if you can exchange them. The cups possibly being damaged in transit is enough of a reason to take it up with customer service.

TwoTimeThat sounds pretty bad. I would definitely take some photos and request for an exchange if I were you.

In the first picture you can see the white scratch under the clear coat below the X in fostex. Second picture black line. Third picture just showing by my eyes subpar wood grain. Maybe some would appreciate the uniqueness of it. The fine scratches on the outside of the clearcoat don't show up in pictures.

TwoTimeE5 should be fine, I use an X7 and they aren't far apart. I agree with the guys here. Raise a ticket with support. Might be possible to get a refund to save you reselling these and see if you prefer the Purplehearts.

TwoTimeMy father has been a wood turner for 50+ years , I gave him a look and he thinks the black mark is probably a natural defect in the timber . White line is definitely damage probably in transit if the boxes are squashed . Grain looks nice to me , some of the pictured ones have been spectacular but it is a lottery with natural stuff . Hope I get lucky mine just left NY for Australia
