I'm really interested but hesitant to take the plunge sight unseen (or sound unheard!) I can't imagine that everyone else is willing to plunk down 4 benjamins without hearing them either, though I may be just wrong and poor. How would I go about handling this? Is there any way to return them should they be underwhelming?

harrisonjr98My coworker has a pair so I had a chance to hear them, but in your situation I would look at the value. $1000 headphones going for $400, so if you don't like them it should be fairly easy to get your money back. The fact that this is the only way/place you can get them should also make them more valuable.

The fact that this is the only place you can get them, and that they are sold for 399 means they are worth 399, not 1000.

LeQwasdThese are essentially customized TH600s, and the MSRP of TH600 had been over $1000, that's where this "simulated" MSRP came from. Just like how K7XX is originally the $500+ K702.
TH600 was undoubtedly overpriced in USA, as the MSRP of it in Japan is only 80000 Yen. Nevertheless Massdrop here are trying to indicate how much these would be if they were sold by Fostex USA themselves. (or likely it is a request from Fostex to preserve the value of the brand)
$1000 is a hyped price, but again Fostex would never sell TH600 at $399, so these are definitely worth more than $399. As you can see the new TH610, which is yet another variant of TH600/TH-X00, is MSRP 75000 Yen in Japan, only 5000 Yen less than the original TH600. You can see that as a "real" MSRP (plus detachable cable) of these.

MeruIn the more reasonable range of $450, I've seen two. One sold for $455+shipping, and one seller offered to sell me his for $450+shipping. Granted, the drop is live, so it's harder to sell right now. I personally decided to just be patient and wait for the drop. It would have been about $60 extra to get them two weeks sooner.

innaterebelThat is not true. You cannot even compare these with TH600 / TH900. Those are on a completely different level. Do you think Fostex has a problem releasing headphones for 399? These are made in China, TH600/900 in Japan, that is what makes them expensive! Geez, open your eyes!

LeQwasdTH600 was made in China. It's discontinued now though. These use modified TH600 drivers.
